Editorial Proud Student Takes Up for WCU, Jose Cuervo; Recommends an Enema for Barzun Dear Editor, I would first like to extend my thanks to you and the entire staff at the WC for a great job done on each and every edition of our school paper. Not only do you offer informative articles on pressing issues on our campus and the community, but you also offer us a good dose of humor which we all need to keep ourselves sane in this ISOLATED (but beautiful) little part of the universe. Whether 1 agree or disagree with the opinions given by your writers, I always read the articles with a grain of salt (and a shot of tequila). My purpose for this note however, is not solely to inflate your EGO'S, but to respond to a certain editorial submitted by "Perplexed" and "Frustrated" student Jacques Barzun. YO! BARZUN! I have no idea who you are or from where you came, and for that matter I don't understand why you so greedily graced a whole page of OUR paper to COMPLAIN about our GREAT SCHOOL!!! The space could have been better used to include more humorous commentary by our talented reporters! I will not claim to be a fortune teller, but I can see many things that will be affecting your life very soon. Shall I name them? 1. YOU WILL LEAVE, DISGUSTED WITH WCU, AS MANY STUDENTS WILL GATHER TO THROW BITS OF THEIR LUNCHES AND RAISE BANNERS—AND YES - EVEN THROW A PARTY TO WISH YOU OFF WITH GOOD THOUGHTS. 2. I find his concern about our education is sincere, but entirely out of place, especially in criticizing how we should act at recreational activities. First off, I would like to remind Mr. Soesbee that the attendance of football games and other sports events is not part of a student's education. The University cannot control a student's behavior at or before such events because many students do not engage in activities such as drinking on campus. What do you want the University to do, prevent students from attending sporting events, and showing their team support? Another point I might add Mr. Soesbee is that the choice of music that students listen to is not, and cannot be, controlled by the University. It also the Western Carolinian's purpose to print articles for the students of Western Carolina University, and a sizable population at Western listen to bands such as Marilyn Manson. So should not the paper do interviews with such bands? Have you never heard of freedom of press Mr. Soesbee? Finally Mr. Soesbee you severely pissed me off when you criticized the competence of the faculty and staff of Western Carolina University. I chose Western because of how the faculty treats students here, like thinking, breathing human beings. There are very few universities that can claim the reputation that Western has. If any student were ever concerned about their safety, at Western, they always know that they can turn anywhere to get help, be it a fellow student, a professor, or any of the numerous staff members, all will do their best to find to help out. Mr. Soesbee the moral status at this campus is fine, so please keep your concerns in Asheville! James B. Poison Gaunt Tells Swift to "Act Responsibly" Dear Editor, I am writing in reply to the commentary written by Scott Swift in the January 19 edition of the Western Carolinian. I am getting sick and tired of writers, whether they are from this paper or other papers, stating facts that support opinions which are not well researched. Lately, this is becoming an epidemic. First of all, Mr. Swift should have looked up in the U.S. Constitution on who has the power to cut or levy taxes. I believe it is Article I. Secondly, if Mr. Swift had bothered to look at both Reagan's and Bush's tax plans he would have seen that the Congress, in both administrations, was supposed to cut spending. As you can see, Congress did not decrease spending nor did they spend tax money responsibly. Thirdly, did Mr. Swift even bother to read the Republican plan and research its effects? If he had, he wouldn't have come up with the totally biased opinion he had. Finally, what is wrong with becoming rich? Rich peopl provide jobs and investments which our economy depends on. Rich people remind me of what a little hard work and determination can get in this world. One of the most important reasons of earning a college degree is to make more money. I will conclude with this advice to Mr. Swift. Newspaper writers have the power to both convince and inform thousands of people. This responsibility should not be taken lightly. To gain my respect and the respect of your readers act responsibly and don't jump on the bandwagon just because it is a popular thing to do. Sincerely, Troy Gaunt Editor's note: In case you did not read or understand, Scott's commentary is exactly that: a commentary based on his opinions. You should take your own advice and took up the First Amendment. SGA Assistant Tells WCU Students How to Appeal Parking Tickets Attention Western Carolin ian: This is simply a report from SGA to let students know some of the benefits they are paying for with their tuition money. 1 remember before I was involved with SGA I wasn't aware that the students have a "lawyer". This semester her name is Kasey Crowell, and she will argue the appeals of our parking tickets we receive over the course of the year. We also have an attorney general named Roddy Ducket who will prosecute the tickets so that we don't abuse the right to appeal. When and if a student • receives a parking ticket that they feel they do not deserve or was wrongfully placed there, there is an appeals process that the student can go through. The first thing we should do is go ahead and pay the fine within 5 days in order to receive the 50% discount. Second, bring the ticket itself or a copy to the SGA office located on the 2nd floor of the UC (there is a copy machine in the SGA office). Just inside the office are blank ticket appeal forms for us to fill out. We just have to fill out our student information and our reason for appealing the ticket. If you paid your fine and are found "not guilty" your money will be refunded. Remember that if you do not pay your ticket in advance and are found "guilty," you will not be given the discount rate. We at the Student Government Association would appreciate you running an article containing this information. We receive phone calls on how to appeal tickets all of the time and have found that a lot of people don't even know that they can. Thank you very much and we look forward to corresponding in the near future with the Western Carolinian. Thank you, Brandon McClure Executive Assistant
