  • 15 Western Carolinian September 29# 1994. •II oo ggIs Chris Burton StaffReporter At 2pm this past Sunday the WCU Club football team played their first home game ever against the Tarheel Club of UNC. When the final second ran off the clock, the Cats had demolished the Tarheels 29 to 10. Great defensive play handed the Football Club their first ever win. When asked about the game, Coach Mike Winchester commented , "Our defense played very aggressive today. The guys gang tackled very well and followed the play. The defensive backs did get caught up in the backfield motion a little and let a few receivers get deep but over all they played a great game." The defense was lead by former All-American corner back Julius Grant who had one interception and several touchdown saving breakups. Other key defensive players were Tony Gunn , Andre Rome, Steve Turner, Jeff Collins, Dewight Winchester, Trevor Moore and Charles Jenkins. The defense stopped the Tarheels on several crucial drives in the first half that could have put the game away. The Catamounts won the toss and received the opening kick. After a fumble, a sack, and an incomplete pass, the punting unit came on. The Tarheels blocked the punt and took over on the Western ten yard line. After a procedure penalty against Western , UNC started first and goal at the 5 yard line. That's when the defense took over. On three straight plays the Carolina offense was thrown for a loss. On fourth and goal from the eleven yard line the Tarheels decided to kick the field goal and took the lead 3-0. After a booming kickoff, the Cats started their second drive from their own 20 yard line. On third and long, auer another penalty , quarterback Travis Stevenson was picked at midfield by Carolina free safety Jerome Booshard. The Tarheels took over at the Catamounts 49 yard line. The defense once again stood like a brick wall stopping the Heels on three straight plays and forcing a punt. The Cats took control at the UNC 41 yard line. On second and nine, quarterback Travis Stevenson found number 20 , Barry Deas, for a 37 yard gain to the 4 yard line. An Offsides penalty on Carolina made it first and goal from the 2. Next, fullback Mike Cheeks scored the games first touchdown. Aaron Tuttles' extra point put the Cats up 7-3 with one minute twelve seconds to play in the first quarter. Tuttle boomed the kickoff into the endzone forcing the Heels to start from their own 20. As the quarter came to an end, James Antonio , on an eleven yard run , gave the Tarheels their first, first down of the game. In the second quarter the Carolina drive was stopped on three straight plays. A partially blocked punt set the Cats up in great field position at their own 46 yard line. Two personal foul penalties against Carolina moved the ball to the Heel's 24 yard line. On first and ten, Dave Church, on a 12 yard run , moved the ball to the 12. Two plays later Church capped off the drive with a six yard scoring plunge. Tuttles' second extra point gave Western a 14 to 3 lead midway through the second quarter. The kickoff was returned to the 21 yard line by Carolina. The Cats took possession on the Heels 34. With the help of 2 Western penalties, the drive came to a halt. The Heels took over once again in good field position at their own 42 yard line. The Western defense stiffened once again. Julius Grant broke up a sure touchdown pass forcing another Carolina punt.
