6 Western Carolinian September 15, 1994 Respect Dear Registrar's Office: Your irresponsible acceptance of students this semester has caused the entire student body to suffer. What have we done to deserve this? With a new semester, I have seen an enormous amount of school pride in Western's students. The first football game packed E.J. Whitmire Stadium with 9190 fans. WWCU, the campus radio station has changed its format, gained contributors such as Radio Shack, Dr. Goodbodies, and possibly Coca- Cola, and has increased its staff 52%. Bids given out during fall rush for sororities showed a 20% increase. We are excited to go to this school to further our education -to better ourselves. We as students reflect the positive image WCU receives today. Outsiders see that, and want to come to Western. So you accept them. And in return, the student body pays the price.In more ways than one! North Carolina Senators and Congressmen raised college tuition 2.9% statewide; yet, at Western, there are not even enough parking spaces to accommodate all of the students because of the increase in freshmen. (You're still writing tickets for illegal parking; There is nowhere to park! You're still allowing us only five tickets a semester). The RAs in Scott dorm are living in the kitchens because there are not enough rooms to accommodate the increase in freshmen. (So, we wash our dishes in the bathroom sink—where we also brush our teeth). Those of us who live on campus are forced to purchase a meal plan. Yet, the cafeteria was closed all Labor Day weekend, including Friday. ("There is always the food court"). Taco Bell ran out of beef on Friday and by lunchtime Monday, Pizza Inn ran out of Pizzas! (Did I mention, there was a 2.8% and 2.9% increase in meal plans this semester?) Please, show us some respect! Show us some appreciation! We, THE STUDENTS, helped to get the University where it is today. We are also responsible for an increase in freshmen. Build us another parking lot. Build us another dorm. Supply us with food we are forced to pay for. If the students are not respected, the school as a whole will not be respected. Sincerely Mad, Peggy English Editorial is It's time to spotlight a group on campus that receives very little recognition. However loud, boisterous, and oddly spirited a crowd, we are seldom heard, at least vocally. Yes indeed, The Marching Cats are often taken for granted. Maybe some of you don't quite understand what I mean by "taken for granted". Well, here goes. Aside from three two hour rehearsals a week and morning rehearsals on game days, (my calculations reveal a week's rehearsal time up to twelve hours including game time), the entire marching band! and auxiliary attend a "Band Camp" one week before the fall semester. Music majors are required to participate in marching band in order to earn a degree, (and a measly one hour credit!) Please! understand, this message is no" a complaint. Because we are dedicated to music, we accept this regimen so that we can maintain a high standard of performance. We do this for ourselves and the school. Ultimately, the band aims to entertain the audience: after all, that's what music is about. The marching band works too hard to be overlooked financially, as is the case. Sadly, the marching band is without uniforms. No, the T- shirts and jeans modeled at the season opener were not an effort to enhance the musical artistry of "Achy Breaky Heart " That is the uniform. Adding insult to injury, we forked out our own dough for the shirts. Unfortunately, the age old "Bubba" mentality has yanked Western by the administrative Undaroos. In "90210" words, funding for the "band geeks" is blatantly overlooked when "popular" athletic teams are being indulged with items one may consider frivolous. (I think you get the point.) For example: the football team is furnished with lap-top computers and steak dinners on Thursday nights. An Athletic Dept. faculty member stated, "If one of my boys needed a pair of shoes, he'd get them in a second." I don't mean to undemine the athletes on campus. However, I do question the mentality that leads one to ill-respect someone because they chose to play an instrument instead of a sport. asner In the September 8, issue of the Western Carolinian you denounced crime and criminals; I agree with you. What I do not agree with is your cynical, mean- spirited, wicked, out-of-touch, no thought, support of Lorena (Man- Hating) Bobbit. Now think, (thinking doesn't mean feeling), which is worse: a golden shower or sexual mutilation? Granted, urinating on people is degenerate, disgusting and slack, but it, as a crime, cannot compare? with cutting people, especially their genitals. This scenario reminds me of a student at WCU. She is a staunch advocate of abortion. She becomes insulted when she heard one of her friends call a black person a "nigger", and justifiably so. But, there is more to this than meets the eye. For someone to invade the private world of an unborn child, slice it up, puree it and vacuum it out is not bad to her. Although, mere name calling (which reveals peoples immaturity) sent her into a rage. What an obvious double-standard! Your support of Lorena Bobbit, as well as, the WCU student's (mentioned above) emotional rage are both classic examples of thoughtlessness. You people are too busy feeling something "as opposed to thinking something". Feelings and rational thought are not always interchangeable, if at all. Thought should superimpose feelings. I'm not saying that feelings are not a replacement for thought, when directing public policy or influence. Thinking brings about a deep-rooted, long-term, successful solution to problems, while feeling (feel-good politics) may make some feel good, it may or may not solve the problem. So "penis severage is why people should carry knives"? Am I correct in hearing that WCU's Editor-in-Chief, "Crime Sucks" writer, is advocating criminal sexual mutilation? What right does any "victim" have to impose genital severage upon anyone. That's a bit like the "pot calling the kettle black". This country has a justice system to enforce our laws and punish offenders. Some may not like our current |udicial system, but that doesn't give the citizen's a "right" (a much-abused word) to "take the law into their own hands", literally or figuratively. Your support of knives as viscous, slaughtering weapons is morbid. Besides, I thought you liberals were against American's exercising their freedom of bearing arms. Let's put this to the test. Take away our guns, knives, stones, chains, ice pics, even dogs, wait awhile and see if assaults decline. You'll see that crime will not go away that fast. The reason- it's the people behind the weapon, what ever the choice, they are to blame. The weapon would only "lay there" unless someone used it. (A real thinker ) would have already deduced this. The people of today, in Western Culture, are being broughtup in a moraless.no- home-training, chaotic society that breeds criminal "germs". Furthermore, your thoughtless support of knives to mutilate peoples sexuality proves my oint: that this country's "going to hell in a hand basket"; because they've lost the ability to objectively, rationally think. Also, I detect a sense of male-bashing in your willingness to dismember men. DoyoC^^ Continued on Pa, hate e7 Football players probably need lap-tops because of their constant traveling. (You lost me on the steak dinner thing, sorry.) Yes, a track runner needs good shoes. On a similar note, pardon the pun, the marching band needs uniforms. If you still remain untouched by the band's desperate plea for clothing, let me be perfectly clear. The Marching Cats have much more exposure than any other musical ensemble on campus. The marching band is responsible for reeling in some much needed talent for the Music Department. Bottom line, if the band looks bad, the freshmen don't come .... Would you play football for a team with no uniforms? Lastly, for my own personal benefit, I have something else to add. If you attended the season opener, you w tnessed the band playing in the pouring rain. A man in the press box (you know who you are) was heard referring to the incident as a "wet T-shirt contest". For you sir, I have this to say: either you have superhuman eyesight from years of perverted endeavors or you were wishfully hallucinating in an alcoholic stupor. In any case, you are apparently very lonely. I wonder why ... No campus organization deserves to be treated with so little respect. Elizabeth Cullinan McNeil & Quinn Supporters I am very disappointed in your choice of words you chose to put in the WC regarding Shawn Mc Neil and Anthony Quinn. As editor-in-chief you should be neutral to the events and facts published in the WC. Crime is a tragedy and brings a hurting feeling to the victims and to society, but as a compassionate human being, you have no right to publicly insult another. Mc Neil and Quinn (allegedly) did wrong, I agree, but I feel someone has to speak for these men. Blake, you called them scum bags! Now what's wrong with that? You have no more right to call these men scum bags than they did to (allegedly) break into a vehicle. Blake, I know you. We were orientation leaders together. I also know you are strong, intelligent and a leader, just as I am, but you need to re-evaluate your train of thought pertaining to this situation. As I stated earlier, you may be right, but your choice of words is totally out of line. You are in an authoritative position by being editor-in-chief, so act like it!!! Barabara J. The Western Carolinian is Western Carolina University's student-run newspaper. The paper was published as the Cullowhee Yodel from 1924 to 1931 before changing its name to The Western Carolinian in 1933.
