Photo By Mark Haskett Jordana Stephens Staff Reporter The time for Freshman Orientation starts Thursday, June 16 and ends with a final session in August. Just what is Freshman Orientation? It is one weekend when students who will be freshmen in the 1994-95 academic year come to Western to see what college is all about. Parents are also invited to attend the weekend's activities at a Parents Orientation. Orientation starts with check-in at Scott Hall where both students and parents stay until the end of the program on Saturday. Throughout the weekend, the activities include walking tours of the campus, placement exams (for students), and seminars for both students and parents. The seminars range from an Organizational Fair where students and parents can learn more about the variety of student organizations are on campus, to mini-sessions that last thirty minutes and offer information on different topics that affect the student at college. Some of the topics are: Residence Hall Life, Financial Aid, Employment, and Campus Security. Thursday evening is highlighted by Freshman Follies and a movie in the UC Grandroom. The Freshman Follies are a collection of ice breakers, games, and skits. Friday evening, a "Dinner on the Lawn" takes place by the Alumni Tower. \lso on Friday, the students can opt to attend a dance in PG Katz or see a movie in Jcott Hall. Overall, orientation is a time for freshmen to be introduced to a new place. Twenty-five percent of all freshmen have not have up their minds to go to Western before going to orientation. Orientation leaders hope that the program helps those freshmen make their decision. Orientation leader Anne Slagle said, "I didn't want to come to Western until I went to orientation." The orientation leaders take part in the orientation programs because they are interested in helping students who are new to Western. Orientation leader, Brian Edlin said, "I like the fact that we have the opportunity to give new students a positive experience in the beginning, which is the most important time in a student's college career." What about transfer students? There is at least one transfer orientation session in late August. However, if a student has recently transferred, they would benefit from attending the freshman orientation seminars and activities. Dee Dee Allen, orientation leader, said "I don't think there's a certain amount of information you have to know. If you can learn it all, it is all important." Introducing Power 91's New GM, Mike Whalen SffiF Michael Whalen is the new General Manager for WWCU campus radio . What does a new general manager mean for WWCU and the students at Western? J: Will any changes be made to WWCU in regards to the for- mats' news, community impact? M: No changes will be made as of right now. I think it is impor- ar>t for WWCU to stay consistent for a while so everyone knows who we are. J: Do you have any comments about your new staff ? M: I think this will be the best year the station will probably ave. I've known everyone on staff for at least two years. We all are mu*ing as one. J: What are your goals as General Manager of WWCU? M: To promote the station more. To get out on campus and let Jeryone know they have a station up here. To get involved more 1 n the community and non-profit groups. We are also going to be orking a lot more closely with the Communications Department, including Dr. HlllandDr.Stillion. J: What do you see in the future for promotions? How are they ^oing to change? M: We are going to start doing more dorm storms, starting this summer. J: What exactly are the dorm storms? M: The dorm storms are a time when people from the station will go out to the dorms and find the students. It is a chance to meet our audience. J: What other promotions will the station be making? M: Dinners on the lawn each week during the freshman orientation sessions where WWCU will have live broadcasts from 4-6 p.m. at the UC lawn. And then there's Lollapalooza, in Charlotte. We will give away tickets and have contests. J: The Western Carolinian received information on a break-in that occurred at WWCU. M: The break-in occurred on May 14th. Two doors at the station were kicked in. Some posters were ripped down, and a couple of CD players were flipped, but not damaged. Photo By Just'n Menickelli • * 111 * t *,».*.*.*.*.
