  • Page 14 Sports December 9,1993 Western Carolinian Hayes picked All-American Derek Smolik StaffReporter Kerry Hayes, Western Carolina University's record- setting kick returner and wide receiver, was named to the Kodak All-American I-AA football team earlier this week. The junior from Camden, SC, was second in 1-A A in kick-off returns this season with a 36.5 yard average. He also returned three kick-offs for touchdowns, tying an NCAA I-AA record for a single season. His combined seven kick return touchdowns (both punt returns and kick-off returns) in his career is just one short of the all-time Division I-A A record of eight held by Cliff Branch and Johnny Rodgers. With his three returns for touchdowns this year, Hayes established a new I-AA career record for kick-off returns with six. With his selection Hayes became the first WCU player to be named to a first team All-American team since GenoSegers was a first team selection in 1988. All- Pro Clyde Simmons of the Philadelphia Eagles was the Cats' last Kodak first team All-American selection in 1985. Hayes selection to the All-American team was as a wide receiver, not as a kick returner (the Kodak team does nota pick kick returner). Hayes caught35 passes for 679 yards this past season. He has a total of 104 receptions for 1,992 yards in his career with nine touchdowns. He also ranked in the top twenty in the nation in punt returns with a 9.7 yard average. Cats stumble past Cobras 67-59 Derek Smolik Staff Reporter Western Carolina's men's basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak with a sloppy but effective 67-59 win over the Coker Cobras Monday night in Cullowhee. The Cats tried their best to give the Cobras the game as they shot only 30% from the field and 58% from the foul line in the second half. They were also out-rebounded in the game 43-39. "We set the game back 20 years...but we won," said head coach Benny Dees after the game. Dees spent most of the game either with his head buried in his hands or up on his feet screaming at his players. And with good reason, the Cats blew a 12-point half-time lead in the first seven-and-one half minutes of the second half. Down 35-23 at half-time, the Cobras came out of the locker room on fire. Defensively, they held the Cats without a point until a Frankie King basket at the 15:47 mark. Offensively they went on an 18-6 run to tie the gameupat41-41. Buttheywouldgetnocloser. TheCats quickly got the Cobras into foul trouble and took a total of 19 foul shots in the second half, making 11. Coker also shot themselves in the feet with a rash of turnovers (21 for the game), including 13 steals by the Cats. After a slow first half, Frankie King made his presence known with 15 second half points. He led the team with 23 points and also dished out a team-high three assists. It was King's two free throws and an Anquell McCollum three-pointer with 3:34 left that put the nail into the coffin of the Cobras. In the first half the Cats made Coker look just what they were--a Division II team playing a Division I team. Western ran out to a 21-8 lead behind some tough defense and poor ball handling by Coker. The Cobras committed 12 turnovers in the first ten minutes of the game. "I thought we were going to hold them under 20 points in the first half," Dees said. Tim Ford and McCollum both had ten points in the game, making them the only other players besides King to reach double figures. King was also the only WCU player to shoot better than 50%, as the Cats shot just 37.5% for the game. The Coker game came just two days after the Cats Chris Hunter and B.J. Thompson get in position for a rebound aga inst Coker Monday night (photo by Tracy McLamb). had been whipped for the second straight time at the hands of a Division I-A school. Despite trailing by only four points at the half, the Georgia Tech Yellow jackets rolled toa22-pointvictory. TwodayslatertheCats fared even worse as Georgia ran out to a 20 point lead in the first ten minutes of the game and never let up in a 100-64 blowout win. Western now goes on the road for the next month as they will visit Tennessee (Dec. 17), Minnesota (Dec. 19), Duke (Dec. 30), EastCarolina (Jan. 3) and Davidson (Jan. 5). The Cats' next home contest will be January 6 against the VMI Keydets. Western shakes, rattles and rolls past UNC-Asheville Derek Smolik Staff Reporter It wasn't pretty. As a matter of fact, at times, it was downright ugly. But, as new Catamount head coach Gary Peters was quick to point out, it was a win. "This was a big win for our program," Peters said of the Lady Cats' 77-67 victory over UNC-Asheville Monday night. "Because the program has been down for so long any kind of win will help us." A combination of solid defense, poor ball handling and bad passing (by both teams) led to a total of 62 turnovers in the game. Western came out on top in turnovers with 33. Tine Cats never trailed in the game but could not put away the pesky Bulldogs until an 11-4 run late in the second gave WCU a ten-point lead. Western's height advantage (five Cats are 6'0" or taller) over UNC-Asheville allowed the Cats to control the boards throughout. FiveCatamountballplayershad six or more rebounds, with Angela Rowe and Alicia Brittain leading the way with ten apiece. Only one Asheville player had more than five rebounds (Sheena West with nine) in the game. Rowe also led the way in the scoring department as she and freshman Pam Owens scored 16 points each. Owens' eight points in the last five minutes helped the Cats to hold off the Bulldogs. Three other Catamounts also scored in double figures in the game. Kristy Garrett had 15; Brittain tossed in 12, and Jennifer Adams scored 11. What's surprising about Owens' total is that she got into foul trouble early in the game (three fouls in the first nine minutes) and only played 20 minutes total. "Pam is like the light at the end of the tunnel for us. She's going to be a good one," Peters said. In the firsthalf theCats'lead went upand down more times than a yo-yo. The Cats could not get into a groove. It didn't help theCats cause that Asheville'smadbomber and leading scorer, Amanda Frazier, was three of five from three-point land in the half. Frazier's three-pointer with just 1:24 left in the half pulled the Bulldogs to within two. The win raised the Cats' record to 1-2 on the season after losses to Virginia Tech and Clemson last week. Western's next game will be at home this Saturday afternoon against the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The Cats will not have another home game, after that, until January 8. • Team Sign-ups for Basketball (Women & Men) begin January 11, and end January 19, at 3pm.
