  • Page 10 Features November 4,1993 Western Carolinian Demolition Man: action with Snipes and Stallone Colleen Vasconcellas Staff Reporter Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes star in the futuristic,action-packed thriller, Demolition Man. The movie opens in the year 1996, with what looks like a war zone. Snipes, a psychopathic killer, has taken control of a huge four story building, holding eighty people hostage. Stallone, a cop known as the Demolition Man and the only man who can stop Snipes, is called in to make the arrest. Stallone corners Snipes in the ground floor warehouse. Unable to find the hostages, he questions Snipes. His answer is not a pretty one. Snipes, expecting Stallone, has previously doused the floor with gasoline. The two fight for a little bit, but Snipes soon backs off and playfully lights a cigarette and "accidentally" drops it on the floor. The room is engulfed in flames. Stallone somehow knocks Snipes unconscious and quickly carries him out of the exploding building. Snipes is taken into custody. While Stallone is talking to his chief about the arrest, another cop comes by exclaiming that there are dead bodies everywhere at the scene. Snipes jumps at the chance to take Stallone down with him and screams that Stallone didn't care about them. He just wanted Snipes. Stallone is arrested and is sent to prison along with Snipes. However, prison is not the typical 1993 prison. Here the prisoners are each taken to their own tank and placed inside. The tank is sealed, becoming air-tight. An oily substance is poured in and frozen, leaving the prisoner an ice-cube. Occasionally, the prisoners are thawed out forparolehearingsbutotherwise have no knowledge of their surroundings. Forty years pass, and the viewer gets a good look at the future. All crime is gone. No one uses harsh language, smokes, eats salt or has sex. Plus, the only restaurant existing is Taco Bell. To make a good movie, something has to break this perfect setting, and that is no one other than Snipes. Somehow escaping from his parole hearing, Snipes goes on a rampage, leaving dead bodies in his wake. Unequipped to handle this type of criminal, the police department has no other alternative to thaw out Stallone. Demolition Man is not only action packed, as is every Stallone movie, but it keeps the viewer laughing. Stallone is thrust into a world of which he has no knowledge. Everything has changed, even the bathrooms (Toilet paper hasn't been used for years). People don't say goodbye, but "Be Well." Plus, everytime Stallone or Snipes says an obscenity, a bell goes off, and they are "charged one credit for violation of the verbal code." I give Demolition Man four stars. Stallone and Snipes are great. They keep the viewer either laughing or in wide-eyed suspense. This movie is a must see! Designer Clothes-Out Shoppe Ladies ftppartC 265 N.
