  • Western Carolinian October 14,1993 Features Page 7 Conference highlights child assessment results Marilynn Sproull Contributing Writer On October 19, Western Carolina University will host the "Our Children: Today and Tomorrow (OCTT)" conference at the Ramsey Regional Activity Center. The conference, sponsored by the Region A Child and Youth Planning Council, will highlight the release of a needs assessment of children, youth and families living in the seven western counties of N.C. "The conference marks the end of the data collection phase of the OCTT campaign and the beginning of the action phase," said campaign chair Lee Crites. Giving the keynote address is Ira David Wood, Director of Theater in the Park, Raleigh, N.C. Mr. Wood is a noted writer, composer, director, producer and actor whose work in the theatre has taken him to China, Afghanistan, England and France. Mr. Woodispersonally involved with youth through his work in theatre and has a strong commitment to the family and the community. He wrote and directed the Opening Ceremonies for the US Olympic Festival, the largest single event in the history of North Carolina. Mr. Wood is the only artist to receive two Medal of Arts awards from the Raleigh Arts Commission. The "Call to Action" address will be DAVID WOOD delivered by Dr. Betty Siegel, President of Kennesaw State College, Marietta, GA. Dr. Siegel is a nationally known lecturer and speaker who is recognized as an innovative leader in the field of education. She is a former administrator at WCU having served as the Dean of the School of Education and Psychology from 1976 to 1981. She is the first woman to head an educational institution in the 34-unit University System of Georgia. Dr. Siegel is co-founder of the International Alliance for Invitational Education and serves on the Executive Committee of the Presidential Commission on Teacher Education. "With the release of our data assessment, emphasis is now being placed on building county action teams and coalitions of parents, youth, service providers, civic organizations, government and businesses to impact the priority needs of children. Everyone who is interested in improving our children's future is encouraged to attend the conference," states Crites. The conference is funded by The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, The Ruth and Billy Graham Children's Health Center and Western Carolina University. The conference begins at 9am and registration is $20. Registration by October 14 is encouraged as limited space is available.
