Western's high powered offense, which rolled over the Citadel last weekend was waterlogged by the Aggie defense. WCU was able to muster only 106 yards of total offense in the first half and 297 for the game. A&T, on the other hand, had 401 in the game. But it was the Cats inability to take advantage of their chances in the first half which ultimately doomed them. Western drove inside the Aggie's 35 yard line four times but came away with only a missed field goal to show for it. The Aggies, meanwhile, took their opening possession of the first quarter 80 yards for a touchdown and a quick 7-0 lead. The first chance the Cats had to score came early in the second quarter. Kerry Hayes took an A&T punt 22 yards to the Aggie 24. On third down though,Lonnie Galloway overthrew a pass intended for Hayes and the ball was intercepted at the A&T two-yard line by Curtis Burgins. A&T started the second half off as they did in the first— by driving for a touchdown. Fu llback Larry King took the ball the final 23 yards for the touchdown and a 17-0 lead. A Catamount fumble gave the Aggies the ball in Western territory, and eight plays later, A&T scored again on a 30 yard pass from Maseo Bolin to James Harris. i WCU was finally able to make a dent in the lead on their first possession of the fourth quarter. Galloway led the Cats 51 yards in seven plays with the final yard coming by way of a Chris Houston run. North Carolina A&T put the proverbial nail in thecoffinduring thenextseries as they drove 46 yards in 10 plays for a field goal and a 27-7 lead. The final touchdown came with less than two minutes to WE ALSO CARRY BATH & BODY PRODUCTS BY: *** W Mottura go as Tim Friday ran the ball over from the one yard line to give the Aggies their final margin of victory at 34-7. Turnovers were the big problem for the Catamount offense Saturday as they committed four in the game and now have seven for the season. All seven of the Cats' turnovers have occurred in the two Cat losses. The game also marked the Cats' third straight loss in rainy conditions. The Cats lost to both Samford and Appalachian State in the rain last year, and while it was not raining at game time, the field was waterlogged from a downpour about an hour and a half before the game. The Cats' next ballgame is Saturday against Furman. Western will try to rebound from the loss. The game is the Cats' second conference game of the season. Furman is 2-1-1 for the season and 1-0 in conference play after last week's win of 45-21 over East Tennessee State in Greenville, SC. Injuries could hurt the Cats this weekend as Kevin Thigpen,ScottStinson, Mark Howell and Lee Turnipseed all could miss action as a result. Furman has generally done well in Cullowhee. They have posted a 6-1-1 record at E.J. Whitmire Stadium. The Paladins' last visit to Cullowhee resulted in a 42-14 rout in 1991. Last year the Cats went down to visit the Paladins and came away with a 29-27 win in Furman's homecoming game. Game time is 2 pm at E.J. Whitmire Stadium. J.C.
