The Western Carolina University campus will be filled with purple and gold the first weekend of October, and it's not simply because of purplemountians' majesty or golden fall colors. WCU will be celebrating its annual Homecoming Friday and Saturday, October 1-2, with acitivities including an alumni golf tournament, a concert by legendary blues rocker Delbert McClinton, a fireworks display, a picnic on the lawn, special reunions and, capping it all off, "The Dance of the Decades." Oh, and somewhere in that packed intinerary, they've managed to squeeze in a Southern Conference football game, the crowning of the Homecoming queen and awarding of Western's top alumni and service awards. Acitivities tee off at 11:30am Fri- SJ-Vsf: Suzanne % Sloane of'Winston-Salem, 9(jC., is a senior majoring in child development/ family recreations, nominated by %L- pha Xi 'Delta sorority. She. is a member of the ftfpha Xi Delta sorority. w m 1 day with the annual Alumni Gof Tournament, to be held at Maggie Valley Country Club. Homecoming Centeral Station in the Cherokee Room of Hinds University Center will be open form 5 to 10pm Friday, October! The Holiday Inn of Cherokee will serve as Alumni Accommodations Headquarters, with a welcome and information center open from 5 to 9pm. A free shuttle from the motel to campus will be available Saturday morning, returning after the football game. There will be a reception and dinner at 6:30pm Friday at the Chancellor's U^J Residence for the 50-year reunion class and Distinguished Alumni and Distinguished Service awards recipients. The annual Homecoming Festival will kick off at 5pm Friday, with a picnic dinner, two roving artists, a magician, a balloon sculptor, a "Meet the Cats" session, the presentation of the Homecoming Court and a pep-rally led by the WCU cheerleaders. A highlight of the a free concert at 7pm by Delbert McClinton, winner of a 1992 Grammy Award for his duet "Good Man, Good Woman" with Bonnie Raitt. Singer/guitarist Mike Rayburn will be the warm-up act. A firework display at about 9pm will end the night with a bang. Homecoming Central will re-open at 9am Saturday, October 2, and Byrd Alumni House will be open to the public from 9am until 6pm (except during the XjmBafy'R 'Brawn of Monroe, 'HjZ., is majoring in Business management and finance and is nominated by "Kappa Alpha Trater- nity.
