Letter tO the Editor Parking suggestions Dear Editor, Regarding problems of parking problems at WCU, thanks so very much for addressing this problem! May I suggest the following: 1) Why can't a large parking deck be built behind the Wachovia Bank? This seems to be a large enough lot for one, at least one with two or three decks to hold more cars than are allowed now in the same area?!!.... 2) Or perhaps move the offices from Byrd Building and build a small deck there? 3) Or what about the parcel of land behind all the stores (flower shop, barber etc.) which runs completely down to the Dodson Cafeteria? If the university owns the property, offered for WCU all they would need to do is remove the dirt to make room for a large deck to be built. 4) Or couldn't the shuttle run to a large parking deck if (by slight chance) one were to be built farther off campus if no property is available anywhere close? 5) Just where does all our money we pay for stickers, fines, etc... go? Sincerely, Donna Hunt Editorials Fall has once again fallen, and the time has come for wearing sweaters, going to football games and snuggling under a blanket, and Homecoming. Homecoming this year should prove interesting. There are a great number of activities planned. The Delbert McClinton concert should be good, and there are several beautiful women running for Homecoming Queen. Those of you who voted for Homecoming Court may have noticed the survey at the bottom of the ballot. The main reason for that was because we at the Western Carolinian nominated a ATTENTION COMMUTING STUDENTS WCU PARKING SURVEY What is your age range? 18-20 21-25 26-30 31-40 Over 40 What is your class rank ? Sr Jr Soph. Freshman Grad. Do you have any physical limitations? Yes No How many days a week do you commute? How often can you NOT find a parking space? Please comment: Are you satisfied with the commuter parking facilities at WCU? Do you know what the "required fees" paid WCU are for? If yes, please name three of these services: Do you use the facilities covered by "required fees"? Do you feel these fees could be optional for commuters? If yes, please explain why: If you would like to be a part of the possible solution to commuter parking difficulties at WCU,please complete the questionnaire and return it to the Social Work office, Room 190 McKee or drop it at the Student Government office in the University Center no later than October 8,1993. Thank you for your cooperation in this effort. Homecoming Court: Is it sexist or traditional? guy for Homecoming Court. He is a very nice guy who is new to WCU. He has made friends very quickly, and aside from being nice-looking and hard working, he is a person who could represent the Western Carolina student body well as a Homecoming Representative. However, his nomination was discussed, and it was said if he were allowed to run for Homecoming Court, it might cause too much of an uproar on campus. "It's tradition to have only women on the court," I was told by a member of SGA. My question is WHY? Why not make Homecoming Court a non- sexist event? Why not let students vote for men and women to represent them on Homecoming day. If it has to be divided between men and women, we could have a king and queen for the special event. As usual it is something that each individual student must evaluate to whether he or she cares enough about the issue to let me or SGA know. The survey resu Its were about 60% against and 40% for letting men run for homecoming court. However, the option of having a queen and king was not offered. I've had several people comment to me about the parking situation. I hope that all of you who are concerned will fill out the survey provided by the Social Work Office. They are offering a quick, easy method by which to have your voice heard; please, take advantage of it. I would also like to mention one other thing. My husband's bike was stolen from Reid gym on Thursday evening. It was a fairly old mountain bike of not much monetary value. I would just like to tell the lowly thief that our daughter, whose seat was attached to the cross bar, misses taking rides with her daddy. (If you choose to return it, just leave it at Bob's Mini Mart. There will be no questions asked.) It is a sad and embarrassing day when stealing is apparently something that people (who are assumably going to college to get an education and better themselves) do for the fun of it. That is a disgusting way to spend one's time. Not only are the thieves taking the easy way out, they are also taking something away from someone else. In this case it was a 3 1 /2 year old little girl who is too naive to know why someone would take something that doesn't belong to them. I don't understand it either. -hope to hear from you soon.
