Georgia Southern comes to Cullowhee on Saturday. The Eagles blew open a close game in the second half to win by more than two dozen. The Citadel topped the Cats by ten earlier this season in Charleston. After running out to a big lead, the Bulldogs nearly let it slip away. Western has a chance to claw their way out of the large cellar with two wins this weekend. Virginia Military is presently one game up on the Cats. Baseball team splits doubleheader David Driscoll Sports Writer Last Saturday, the chilly weather kept Western Carolina's baseball team cold in the first game, but they exploded at the plate during the second game to split a double header with Wright State. As a team- the Cats had twelve strikeouts out of 25 at bats. The only score they had was off a single by left- fielder Rob Doherty that drove in first baseman Marc Striker. The Cats had five hits in the game due to the pitching of Brian Anderson. Philip Grundy threw for the Cats. In his seven innings, he threw nine strikeouts. He gave up only two walks and six hits, which was just enough for the Raiders to score three runs in the 6th inning, to win the game 3-1. Game two proved the Cats to be a different team. Centerfielder Mike Tidick started things off early for the Cats with a long ball hit back to the left field track, which moved Lyman H ABRBIR HRAvd 11 22 2 9 0 .500| Connolly 5 12 3 3 0 .417 Hennon 10 25 5 5 0 .400! Next up to bat was Grundy who was offered a pitch that he took deep to the center field fence for a sacrifice fly that scored two runs. On that same play, Wright State's centerfielder, Doug Lowe, in the attempt to reach Grundy's fly ball, ran into the fence. Lowe fell to the ground, but quickly came to his feet contributing to the play that almost threw Tidick out at home plate. Lowe took himself out of the game one inning later because he hurt his arm when he hit the fence. The Cats scored again in the 2nd inning. Doherty got on base on a base error when the leftfielder dropped the pop up. Two batters later, shortstop Stephen Pritchard hit a shot to centerfield, scoring Doherty. He was caught in a run down between firstbase and second base later to end the inning. In the bottom of the third Lyman came up to the plate. He hit a long fly ball to left field. Grundy stepped up to the plate next and hit a homerun over the left field fence, which scored Lyman and gave Cats a 5-0 lead. In the fifth inning the Catamounts teed off against the Raider's pitcher Jayson Smith. Lyman, the second batter of the inning hit a hard ground ball that bounced past the shortstop. Tidick followed up with a long homerun, over the left center fence, which was his third of the season. Grundy then hit a single to right centerfield, giving him his firstmultiplehitday of the season. The Raiders then switched pitchers from Smith to righthander Marc Galan. More, who was pinch runner for Grundy, made his way to third by way of a sacrifice fly from Striker and a single to center by Doherty. He scored on a pass ball shortly after the pitching change. The Raiders scored two runs in the seventh inning to add to their score, but fell short of the win. Even though the Cats wentthrough several pitchers with Jason Beverlin, Brad Tweedie, Joe Sellers, and finally Mike Manning all seeing action, the Cats still maintained the lead and won 8-4.
