  • Volume 58 Number 21 Voices The Western Carolinian Page 3 Thursday, February 25. 1993 Letters to the Editor Bashing of Clinton must stop Laura L. Adams ■ Editor- in- Ch ief In response to the letter to the editor titled "Clinton Fits Many Roles" printed in the Feb. 18th edition of TWC, several readers and myself felt that the real issue was not addressed. First of all, let's remember that Bill Clinton had been President for all of a month when that article was printed. Secondly, who was it that really was the confused President, a President searching for his identity? The answer is so simple - George Bush. Why, you ask? That too can be understood by most elementary school students. Clinton has failing memory I often wonder about a ■politician's memory. Does he recall that the American colonists revolted in 1776 because they were over- ; taxed by an overbearing govern- -ment? Does Mr. Clinton recall that George Bush gave into a tax in- : crease in 1990, only to face a voter •backlash in 1992? For Bush's tax increase, I ;can say little in support. In his four years as President tax revenues rose 16%,from$989.7billionto$l.142.6 trillion, while government spending rose from $1,143 trillion to $1,475 . trillion. Spending rose 29%, while revenues rose a mere 16%. This increased the government's yearly ; budget shortfall (deficit) from $153.57 in 1989 to an incredible $327.3 billion! So much for no new taxes, but what about new spending? One must remember that the people who created this mess are not royally appointed emissaries of King George III. They are representatives elected by a free voting populous. Only when we as citizens accept our responsibility for our elected leaders' actions may we properly deal with this economic fiasco which has created a $4 trillion deficit. We must write and call our representatives and say NO to new taxes. Governmental prudence is the only answer! We cannot literally or Abuse of land must stop Landowners have devised .. ;many uses for their property, from wildlife sanctuary to high-density dwellings. As long as the use is not , an outright public hazard or a nui- , sance, a property owner should be . able to do pretty much whatever he wants to do. However, landowners know the system does not work that way. Whether the reason is the pro- , tection of wetlands or endangered ^species, purification of our water supplies, or the creation of green belts and other zoning regulations, .our options for using our land are diminishing. There is another use of land that needs to be addressed. Several non-profit groups are in business to ! acquire private lands. Title is some- «: times retained, sometimes turned ;"- over to the federal government. If a : group wants to buy, own and main- * tain land to pursue its own organiza- • \ tional goals, fine. It is when this land ; 'is sold to the government that prob- **lems occur. The Interior Department's 1 ^Inspector General has reviewed land . purchases made by the National Park •_fervice, the Fish and Wildlife Ser- :«tjce and the Bureau of Land Man- Ijtgement. In 1991, these three groups ^Ispentmore than $219 million to buy land. In the previous four years, they spent almost a billion dollars. The audit reveals bureaucratic waste and arrogance. After the Inspector General's report was submitted, spokespersons at the various agencies involved responded, mostly defensively, claiming there were reasons they paid what they paid. Perhaps so. However, the investigation should continue into such squandering of government money, our money. There are presently wide variations in policies, procedures and attitudes among the government agencies. Weneed uniform policies. These new guidelines must include a requirement for full documentation of the financial arrangements between government agencies and the non-profit organizations, including substantiation that all claimed expenses were actually incurred. America's fanners as well as the general public are growing more concerned about the vast amount of land owned by government — land forever free from paying property taxes and probably forever on the tax-receiving end. Government at all levels already owns more than 40 percent of all land in this country. It's time to control misuse and abuse. W Kingdom ■y *"*•"> ■-h-p, jr. The Timeless Time Question \fC Do you have the time ?j V —y.m.mm 1 figuratively afford to continue this cycle of higher taxes and higher governmental expenditures. If we do not rise to stop the federal budget's ridiculous increase there will be no one but ourselves to blame when we become a socialist nation in which a citizen's entire income is taken by an insatiable political class, whose sole survival depends on the taxes with which they may freely burden the working class. It's our future, it's our nation, and it's our responsibility to finally create an intelligentand caring government. Long Live American Liberty! In good faith, Jeffrey H. Sykes Let's take a little trip back in time. Remember George Bush - President of the People? I think not. The middle class and all minority groups were left out under his "reign." His refusal to sign the medical and family leave bill clearly showedhis lack of interest in women, the middle class, minorities, and American families. I guess it's no big surprise then that the "President of the People" was a one-termer. And what about George Bush - The Environmental President? What a joke! His refusal to lower emissions of greenhouse gases or even attend that summit with the leaders of the rest of the industrialized world showed he had no interest in the environment either. So, what was George interested in as our President? The White House dog, Millie? How to correctly spell veto? I don't know, but it couldn't have been much else. We're back then to the point of this letter - George's identity. I think he finally found it when he lost the election. George Bush - Ex- PresidentoftheU.S. I like the sound of that.
