Name: Address: Danell Moses Staff Writer "Western Carolina University and the State of North Carolina are blessed with many fine support staff. However, Wanda Ashe shows a combination of willingness to work hard, eagerness to learn new skills, attention to accuracy and detail, loyalty, dependability and positive interactions with a variety of people that goes far beyond the requirements of her position," remarked Chancellor Myron L. Coulter of the winner of Western Carolina University's 1992 Recognition Award for Outstanding Support Personnel, Wanda Ashe. Ashe was recognized for her outstanding efforts at a recent annual service awards luncheon held at WCU. Ashe is a secretary in die Office of Academic Affairs. Her supervisor, Dr. Judith Stillion, nominated her for the award because of her many outstanding qualities not only as a secretary but also as a person. "As impressive as her secretarial skills are, Wanda's greatest assets lie in her personal and interpersonal skills. Personally, she maintains an unfailingly positive attitude and cheerful disposition. Her sense of humor, while quiet, is appreciated gready by her co-workers. In the ten years I have worked with her here and in the Psychology Department or observed her work in other areas, I have never known her to lose her temper with a caller or visitor," noted Stillion. "She sets high professional standards for herself and has become a model for other secretaries on campus," Stillion added. Ashe has worked at WCU since 1979. She has worked in the Cherokee Center, die Psychology Department, the Office of Institutional Studies and Planning, and the Office of Academic Affairs where she has been since 1989. In addition to working full time with an ever increasing workload responsibility, Ashe has also gone back to college and earned a degree in business administration at Southwestern Community College. When asked how she felt about winning the award, Ashe responded, "It was such an honor to win it! I'm still pinching myself to see if it really happened. Knowing the other people who were nominated and that they deserved it just as much as I did really makes it overwhelming to have won. " "I like to do my job and do it well. I don't like to turn in something that I don't feel F ve put 100% in to it. I guess in that sense I am a perfection- ist. I pay a lot of attention to detail. I want it to be just so. So not only does it make Dr. Stillion look good, it also makes me look good," said Ashe. Her work and personable manners have won her a nomination 4 times for the Recognition Award for Outstanding Support Personnel and she is now being nominated for the 1992 Governor's Award for Excellence. "Whether I'm doing 1 thing or 27 things I know I can count on Wanda. She is a most prolific worker. She routinely turns out a high volume of work with nearly perfect accuracy. She is highly dependable," commented Stillion. "She is a living example of the type of partnership that most supervisors hope for in their support staff," Stillion added. As the winner of die award for this year, Ashe received a plaque and a check in the amount of $ 1,000. When asked what she planned to do with the thousand dollars, Ashe replied, "I'm not sure what I will do with the $1,000. I've picked out some sensible things to buy with it and I've thought about buying some frivolous things too. Actually, I have thought of a thousand things to get!" Ashe and her husband, Michael, live in WebsteronBuchanan Loop. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Weaver Fox, live in Otto.
