  • Volume 58 Number 1 Sports The Western Carolinian Page 7 Thursday, June 18. 1992 Raleigh leads parade of Catamount record breakers Three Cats taken in Major League Draft, Montreal takes Kyslinger in 5th Derek Smolik Sports Editor Many school records were broken this season, a few Catamount baseball players were taken in the major league draft, and a few received postseason honors as well. It is known at this time that three Catamounts have been taken in the major league draft. Dan Kyslinger was taken in the 5th round by the Milwaukee Brewers, Matt Raleigh was picked in the 14th round by the Montreal Expos, and Jack Kimel was chosen in the 28th round by the Texas Rangers. Matt Raleigh was named to the Mizuno NCAA Division I Ail-American Baseball team. Raleigh was a second team selection as a designated hitter. He was also picked to the South II Regional All- Tournament team at shortstop and named Southern Conference Player of the Year. Rodney Hennon and Kimel were both named to the GTE Academic Ail-American baseball team. Hennon was a first team selection at second base, while Kimel was a pitcher on the second team. Both players were second team All- Southern Conference selections and Hennon was also named to the South II Regional first team at shortstop. Also receiving postseason honors were Phillip Grundy and Joey Cox. Grundy was named to the South II Regional Tournament team as a pitcher, and second team All-Conference as a pitcher and designated hitter. Cox was the MVP in the Southern Conference Tournament as he hit four homeruns and had 10 RBI's. He was also first team All-Southern Conference as an outfielder. Raleigh finished his four year career by rewriting almost every career Catamount hitter record. He has played in the most games (242), has the most At- Bats (837), reached base the most "FSU Win" cont. from Pg. 6 came in the bottom of the ninth inning. With the home town crowd chanting and banging their seats, the Seminoles sent up pinch hitter Allen Bevis to lead off. Kyslinger struck him out and Chris Roberts as well. With two outs though, Kyslinger walked Jarrett and the Seminoles sent in pinch runner Grady Jordan. Jordan took off from first, but was gunned down by catcher Roy Hurst to end the game. "I was excited, it was a big ball game for the program and me. We came down here and didn't get a lot of respect. Everybody came out and played their hearts out. This game, I think, really put Western on the map," said Grundy after the game. times (488), has the most hits (302), most homeruns (68), most RBI's (239), most total bases (5 80), and most runs scored (251). Raleigh also set or tied several single season records as well. He set the single season record for most times reaching base (149), his 25 homeruns tied the record set by Clint Fairey in 1988, and his 77 runs scored tied the record set by Kevin Bellomo last season. He also became the first Catamount to hit 20 homeruns and steal 20 bases in a single season. Cox tied the single sea son record for doubles with 21. Both he and Hennon broke the single season record for at-bats. Cox had 252, while Hennon had 251. Hennon also tied the single season record for singles with 73. Scott Lyman set a school record with a 23 game hitting streak (over two seasons). In the pitching department Kimel leads the way in career records, but is closely followed by Grundy. Kimel set the career record for wins (3 3), most appearances (70), most strikeouts (259), and most innings pitched (348.2). Grundy, in just two seasons, is already 9th in career strikeouts (180), tied for fourth in wins (20), and ninth in ERA (3.24). His 110.1 innings pitched this season is just three innings shy of the single season record. Kyslinger set the single season record for lowest earned run average with only a 0.85 in 31.2 innings this season. He also tied the single season save record with nine. The Cats broke or tied three team single game records against Marshall this season. In their 29-1 blowout, they set team records for most runs (29), largest margin of victory (28), and tied the record for most hits in a game. They also broke or tied several team records. Their 44 wins is far and away their most. Their 446 strikeouts breaks the old record of 375 easily. Their 12 saves ties the record set by the 1990 team. They also earned their seventh regular season title, second most in conference history. Their 17 league wins is a conference record. They also missed by one tying the school record for home wins (23). Scoreboard Baseball Lyman Raleigh Hennon Cox Grundy Tidick Bradley Whitson Striker Hilton Hurst Doherty Hooven AB.
