  • Volume 56 Number 24 Sports The Western Carolinian Page 6 Thursday, April 11, 1991 Cats slip, but win two from Boonies Tony Bolick Sports Editor The Western Carolina Catamounts dropped Appalachian State two out of three games in the Ronnie Childress Stadium this weekend. The Cats split a double- header on Saturday (3-4, 4-1) and outran the Mountaineers for a 15-9 win on Sunday. The win kept the Cats a half a game out of first place in the conference. Defending champion,The Citadel Bulldogs.now lead the conference with a record of 11 -1 followed by Western's 10-1. The Cats lost their first conference game of the season in the first game of the Saturday double- header, 4-3. They held a 3-2 lead going into the final inning before reliever Brad Tweedlie surrendered a two-run homerun in the seventh. With two out in the inning, designated batter Mike Hilton reached first on a walk. Dwayne Bradley then flied to right field on a sure out that was muffed but the rally was ended sharply as Hilton was gunned down trying for third. "We've faced some good pitching in the last week and a half. Our hitting has plateaued but we're just a little off," said head coach Jack Leggett. "We played tough, today. It was nice to split the games but we're a better team than that," he added. The Catamounts got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the fourth inning. Kevin Bellomo reached first on an throwing error. Then clean-up hitter Todd Raleigh, who had the only hit for WCU in the game to that point, ripped a 2-0 pitch over the left-center field wall for the two-run homer. In the fifth, Western added another run thanks to two walks and a single from Mike Minacci. The score was 3-0 and WCU had only three hits to the Mountaineers' five. Those were all the hits the Cats would have in the game. ASU began their comeback in the sixth. Starter Patrick Kendrick gave up two hits and one run. With two out, coach Jack Leggett elected to bring in reliever Brad Tweedlie. Tweedlie got out of the inning but not after giving up two hits and a second run. In the top half on the seventh, ASU got a leadoff single from Will Shellman and a sacrifice bunt moved him to second. Tweedlie then threw a fastball to Johnny McCraw who ripped the game winning homerun. Tweedlie took the loss for the Cats. Game two also had quiet bats.. After surrendering an opening single to Chris Chilton, Jack Kimel faced Will Shellman. Shellman ripped a 2-0 pitch deep to left center. Centerfielder Kevin Bellomo jumped into the air near the fence, stole the homerun. He hit the fence immediately after the catch and, landing on his feet, threw out Chilton at first on one hop. Western again scored first but didn't get one hit. Andy Dunn led off reaching first on an error. Then, Mountaineer starter Chris Smith walked three straight batters, walking in Dunn for the 1-0 WCU lead. The Cats would not trail again. They added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Matt Raleigh lead off with a single and Bradley singled to put men on first and second. After a Joey Cox sacrifice bunt to move the runners and left fielder Rob Doherty being hit by a pitch, the bases were loaded. Mike Minacci hit a 2RBI single to give Western a 3-1 lead. ASU got out of the inning on a double play In the top of the fifth after a lead-off strikeout, Kimel surrendered the only ASU run with a first pitch solo homerun by Tony Cabe. Kimel, who suffered through only one shaky inning, pitched his second complete game of the year and raised his record to 5-3 on the year. Sunday. WC1MS. ASIJ-9 Western took the lead in the bottom half of the first inning, 3- 2, on a two run triple by Todd Raleigh that scored Andy Dunn and Kevin Bellomo. Raleigh then scored on an RBI single by brother Matt Raleigh. WCU threatened to blow it open in the bottom of the third inning, sending ten batters to the plate and scoring five runs. The lead at the end of three: 9-2. The Mountaineers staged a come back in the eighth inning scoring five runs on two hits, two hit batters, two walks, and a two run error.
