Robertson Staff Writer The Catamounts pulled off a major non-conference upsci, defeating Ohio Valley leader Tennessee Tech 83-78. Western Carolina's twenty-three to seven run early in the second half gave the Cats the lead for good over Tennessee Tech Wednesday night before a Ramsey Center crowd of 1,142. "I think this win is indicative of how much our team has improved and developed over the course of the season," stated Catamount Coach Gregg Blatt. "Not only was it a well- played game, it was a significant win for us because we beat a quality team," Blatt added. The Cats trailed by six when freshman guard Carey Rich scored underneath, starting the run. When the dust setded, Western held a ten point lead 67-57 with a long ten minutes and 42 seconds lo play. Tech responded with three pointers by Bobby McWilliams and Bruce Oglesby, but the Cats refused to break to the team lhat had beaten them 107-87 earlier in the season in Cookeville, Tenn., answering every attempt at a comeback. WCU's poor free-throw shooting kept the game interesting. They missed five of their first nine free throws in the second half, but made five of their last six to seal the win. Carey Rich and Terry Boyd led all scorers with 20 points each. Rich lii up the basket with eight field goals in eleven attempts. Robert Gaines added 12 points and led Western in rebounding with 11. "Carey...he's making one heckuva run for freshman of the year in the league...20 points tonight, six assists, one turnover, five rebounds; whatagreat floor game," addedBlatt. The Golden Eagles shot only 39 percent from the field for the game. Tech's senior guard Bobby McWilliams and Bruce Oglesby led the Eagles with 19 points apiece.
