January was the start of conference play with Western's first three-game home stand of the season. Western began by playing the pre-season #1 pick. East Tennessee State. Western played hard, but ETSU's size and depth was just too much for the shorter Cats, and the same goes for the rest of the conference. ETSU won by the final score of 92-73. Keith Gray led Western with 22 points. Western continued its home stand playing Appalachian State. ASU held off Western in a fight to the finish with an 80-78 win. It was the Cats' fifth straight loss before a big home crowd of 2,841. With three seconds left, David Don- erlson's three-point attempt at the buzzer was blocked. Eric Dailey was the high scorer for the Cats with 17 points. The third game of the three game home stand was against VMI. Western won by the score 72-66. Clemson crushed West- em 97-61 with its height and power. Clemson had 12 jams against the Cats, but Western stayed close until the 13 minute mark in the second half when the Cats went cold and went almost eight minutes without a point. Western's David Donerlson led the way with 21 points. Western continued its travels to Tennesee to face UT-Chattanooga. Western lost once again. The Cats rapped up their road trip with an upset over Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C. Keith Gray scored a career high 31 points and Western won 85-79.
