  • The Western Carolinian Page 5 Thursday, November 2. 1989 Renowned Vocal Ensemble Chanticleer Coming to Western Shawn Busby Associate Editor Chanticleer, an eight-man vocal ensemble, will perform in the WCU Music-English Building Recital Hall on November 13 at 8 pm. The Chanticleer tour concert format takes the listener through six centuries of male vocal literature. Selections in the first half of the performance will include Gregorian Chants, English and Italian madrigals and part-songs, French chansons, and commissioned works. British and American folk songs, contemporary classics, Big Band-Era arrangements, gospel and spirituals. Jazz numbers are second-half material. Through the course of its ten- year existence, Chanticleer has established itself as one of the premiere vocal ensembles both nationally and internationally. The New York Times called Chanticleer "An ensemble with first-class technical security, persuasive stylistic command, and a charming onstage demeanor." The Chanticleer voca' ensemble An Early Music Program, New Music Conceit, Combination Program, and Christmas Concert are also offered by the Chanticleer ensemble. Featured in the Early Music Program are both sacred and secular repertoire, including works by major composers of the 14th - 16th centuries. The New Music Concert is one way that Chanticleer promotes contemporary music and composers. Programs of this type have included U.S. and World Premieres in addition to Chanticleer commissions. Comprised of both sacred and secular music, the Combination Program is performed in two segments. The first half is devoted to the Renaissance era, while the second half includes sacred and secular works of the twentieth century and commissioned pieces. Recent Chanticleer commissions have included major works by Anthony Davis, Bernard Rands, Steven Sametz, and others. The Christmas Concert combines sacred and secular repertoire of the holiday season. The first half of the program contains early sacred selections of Byrd, Mouton and Francesco Guerrero. Included in the final segment are Christmas carol med- iies. Several foundation and government grants have been awarded to Chanticleer in recognition of its artistic accomplishments. In 1988, the National Endowment for the Arts awarded its largest choral grant ever to Chanticleer. A Consortium Commissioning Grant was awarded to Chanticleer for its commitment to new works. Chanticleer is a frequent guest of such radio programs as "St. Paul Sunday Morning," "A Prairie Home Companion," "Good Evening," and "West Coast Weekend." While touring Germany, the ensemble recorded gospel and spirituals for WDR-Radio of Cologne, West Local Bed and Breakfast Offers Old-Fashioned Service The downstairs offers two Germany. Included in the Chanticleer recordings are "The Anniversary Album," "Psallite! A Renaissance Christmas," "Chanticleer in Concert," "Grant Motets Solennels" and "Byrd: Missa in Tempore Paschali," a 1987 release, which has been called "superbly true" by The New York Times. The group formed in the spring of 1978 when director Louis Botto invited several tenors and basses to sight-read through a collection of Renaissance material. Botto saw the potential of the group and booked its first concert at Mission Dolores. Following two years of informal performances, Chanticleer was signed for a five-week tour by Columbia Artists Management. In July 1980, Chanticleer was discovered by the prestigious conductor Robert Shaw. Shaw's comment following their performance was "My God, what a group." The members of Chanticleer named their ensemble after the lusty rooster in 'The Nun's Priest Tale" in The Canterbury Tales. In French, Chanticleer means "to sing clearly." Shawn Busby Associate Editor The Cullowhee Bed & Breakfast, owned and operated by Dick and Irene Coleman, offers all the comforts of home to Cullowhee visitors. Located at 150 Ledbetter Road, the home is comprised of four upstairs bedrooms, two luxury baths, two large visiting rooms, a modern kitchen, and a breakfast room. The house sits on five acres of land. One of the bedrooms is rented as a private suite. This is a large corner room with a queen-size bed, private bath, dresser drawers, closets, and cable television. Adjacent to this room is a furnished deck. According to Mr. Coleman, "Guests will often rent out the entire upstairs area and use the deck for their partying and gatherings." The remaining three bedrooms each have a queen-size bed, closet space, ceiling fans, and dresser drawers. These rooms share one large bathroom. "We keep our rooms spotless; I'm a stickler for that," says Mr. Coleman. Smoking is not allowed in the house. The cost of the private suite is $53 per night while the three refraining rooms go for $43 each. This price is much lower than that of other local motels. "Sometimes if the Catamount Inn is full they will call to see if we have any rooms available," says Mr. Coleman. Nearly all of the Cullowhee Bed & Breakfast guests are parents of WCU students. A full breakfast is included in the price of each room. According to Mr. Coleman, "Guests never go away from the table hungry." Parents staying at the house are welcomed to invite their children overfor breakfast at a cost of only $3 per student* "Our breakfast is all you can eat; and the kids love the homemade sausage gravy that Irene and I make," says Mr. Coleman. The Colemans do not have a certain time for breakfast. "We try to work with our guests in determining a convenient time to eat," says Mrs. Coleman. For large parties, or in the case of visiting students, the Colemans may serve two or three sittings throughout the morning. "We might have twelve people the first time, six the next, and eight the next," says Mr. Coleman.
