October 26, 1989 USA Today Seeks Nominations For Nation's Top Undergraduate Students OPI-- USA Today has begun its search for the USA's best college students to be named to its All-USA Academic Team. Students selected to the first, second, and third teams will be featured in a USA Today special section planned for mid- January. The 20 first-team members will be invited to receive their awards at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. Any full-time undergraduate is eligible for consideration. All-USA Academic Team nomination forms have been sent to Deans at colleges and universities nationwide. Students may nominate themselves by completing the nomination form and having a Dean sign it. Students may also submit with the form up to three letters of recommendation from persons on or off campus. Nominees will be judged for outstanding individual academic endeavor; community/ campus activities and leadership roles therein; awards, honors and demonstrations of initiative; and grade point average. Criteria for the team were developed in consultation with USA Today's co-sponsors: the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, the National Association of State Universities and Land- Grant Colleges, the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, and the Council forthe Advancement and Support of Education. The Western Carolinian is Western Carolina University's student-run newspaper. The paper was published as the Cullowhee Yodel from 1924 to 1931 before changing its name to The Western Carolinian in 1933.
