  • Sports \ The Western Carolinian Page 10 Thursday, September 28, 1989 East Tennessee Buccaneers Plunder Catamount Squad 30 -11 by Tony Bolick On the weekend when Hurricane Hugo brushed the Appalachians, the Buccaneers of East Tennessee State rained on the Western Carolina Catamounts 30-11. The Cats came to Johnson City trying to go 3-1 and 2-0 in the conferences for the first time since 1974. By the time the first quarter was over, the Cats were well behind and the game never got better. Head Coach Dale Strahm summed up the Cats' performance and the game. "We got taken to the woodshed tonight. Getting beat by East Tennessee is one thing, but getting taken to the woodshed like we did is another, lam extremely disappointed in our lack of intensity and concentration... neither was there." ETSU was the first on the scoreboard when Kevin Phipps caught a pass from Mark Williams at the Bucs' 10 and then broke the tackles of Reggie Graves and Terrell Wagner to score with 1:36 to go in the first quarter. The kickoff was mistakenly downed when Graves thought he was in the end zone. Then, to add to the misery, freshman Andra Rosbor took a hand- off and fumbled on the Cats' 9- yard line, and the Bucs recovered. The next play saw All- Southern Conference candidate George Searcy run around the left end nine yards to score with :48 still left in the quarter. The second quarter didn't get any better. After trading turnovers in the midst of the second quarter, the Catamounts put together an eleven-play, 55- yard drive led by Carlton Terry's O'PI Hhoto Derrick Harrison Stops a Buccaneer Pass 27 yards on 7 carries. The drive stalled on the Bucs' 18-yard line, and Clay Cox put the Cats on the board with a 35-yard field goal with 4:10 left in the 2nd. East Tennessee took the score as a threat. Using Searcy's running, along with a 25-yard pass from Williams to Phipps, the Bucs went 70 yards on eight plays to score. On a key fourth-and-one from the Western 17, Searcy took the pitch and scampered into the end zone with 26 seconds left before halftime. The Bucs took a 21-3 lead into the locker room at the break. Similar to the Mocs game, the statistics didn't reflect the game. Western led in time of possession (14:05-15:55) and only trailed in total yards by 44 yards. Turnovers were few, but Western had one interception and committed the fumble that set up ETSU's second score, while the Bucs only had afumble. Cottrell, who was ineffective the first half, started the second half and was intercepted on the third play from scrimmage. Searcy and the ETSU running game continued to press the Cats. When the Cats began to key on Searcy and slow the Bucs, Coach Don Riley pulled his magic wand out. On second and 7 from the Cats' 45, Searcy took a handoff and reversed it to flanker Dale Middleton, who raced 45 yards to score with 6:05 remaining in the third quarter. The lead stretched to 27-3. Late in the third, the Cats started a drive from their own 40. Mistakes continued to plague the Cats as back-to-back penalties threatened to stall the Cats again. Quarterback Mark Smith, who replaced Cottrell after the first series of the quarter, took the team to the ETSU 5. Andra Rosbortried to score for the Cats on consecutive plays but the quarter ended with a third and three on the 3. Smith was flushed from the pocket and scrambled for a gain of one. Trailing by many points, Slrahm took a chance, and on fourth and two, Rosbor was stepped inches from the goal. On the next possesion for the Cats, Cottrell returned for the Cats, after ETSU QB Randy Meredith fumbled the ball to the Cats on the Bucs' 39. Cottrell completed a 7-yard pass and then an ETSU unsportsman-like conduct penalty gave the Cats first down at the Bucs' 20. From there, Carlton Terry took over. With runs of 6 and 12 yards, he set up his 2-yard scoring plunge with 8:06 left in the game. The Cats still had and outside chance. The onsides kickoff attempt failed and gave the ball to East Tennessee at midfield. Searcy continued to lead the Bucs, who ran Western backwards to their own goal line. The Cats dug in and stopped Searcy on three straight goal-line plays. The ensuing fourth-and-goal was thwarted with just over a minute left when consecutive penalties were levied against ETSU after the third-down play. The two 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalties forced place-kicker Mike Shoun to attempt a 50-yard field goal. The kick was good and the score stood at 30-11 with only 1:20 left in the game. The Cats tried to close the lead one last time but fell short on the ETSU 18. Carlton Terry lead the Cats in rushing, with 78 yards on 22 carries. Searcy led the Bucs with 144 yards and two TDs on 36 carries. ETSU led rushing yardage (222-105) but only managed 42 yards passing on Meredith and Williams's shuttling. They combined to finish 4 completions on nine attempts, only throwing two passes the entire second half. Cottrell and Smith combined to finish 13 to 28 with 145 yards. Yardage totals were ETSU-264 and WCU-250. The statistics did not reflect it, but, as Coach Scott stated after the game, "East Tennessee took it to us and kept coming, to give us an old fashioned...whipping." The Cats turned the ball over six times, compared to four for the Bucs. Coach Strahm said that the Cats made bad decisions in every part of the game. Disappointment showed on the faces of the entire staff at the half and after the game. What was warned against after the UTC game happened to the Cats. Mistakes caught the Cats and a lack of intensity was the tell-tale sign that the team was in for a struggle. The problem was that ETSU wasn't as weak as everyone outside the team thought, and they ground the Catamounts to their backs. The crowd support for Western was modest, just over 100. To finish off Mountain Heritage Day, the Catamounts will return home for a 7 pm night game against the Mars Hill Lions.
