  • People The Western Carolinian Page 4 Thursday, July 20,1989 WCU Professor Receives $15000 Research Grant Richard Adler, an assistant professor of biology at West- em Carolina University, has received a $15000 grant from the North Carolina Board of Science and Technology for research that could help unravel the mysteries of cancer as well as the early days of pregnancy. In a project entitled "Hormonal Control of Metal- loproteinase Inhibitors in the Mouse Uterus," Adler hopes to determine what impact hormone levels have on the successful implantation of a fertilized egg in the uterine wall. "The embryo is one of the most invasive cells known. It's more .asive than a cancer tu mor," Adler says. "But in some cases, the embryo won't penetrate the uterus at all, and sometimes it will completely penetrate the uterus." Adler hopes to discover whether hormonal behavior plays a role in the formation of "inhibitors" crucial to the control of implantation of the embryo in the uterus. His studies may reveal why the success rate for in vitro (test tube) fertilizations is so low, and may also shed light on why some cancer cells are malignant and others are benign. "The types of inhibitors found in the uterus are also found in benign tumors, but not in malignant tumors," he says. "What allows the tumors to spread may be the absence of these inhibitors. There are many tumors in which the level of activity is associated with changes in hormonal levels in the body." Adler will test for the presence of inhibitors in tissue and extracellular fluids isolated from the mouse uterus. He will inject the mice with various hormones such as estrogen and progesterone to see how these hormones affect the presence of the inhibitors. Adler will work with Carol Brenner, currently of Greenlabs of Redwood City, Ca. Brenner will soon move to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. Riverhouse Restaurant Undergoes Renovation By Bill McEntire Jack McKenny is remodeling his Riverhouse Restaurant, and building a split level deck over the Tuckaseegee River for outdoor dining. Jack has a track record of rebuilding restaurants—the Bay View in Balboa, Ca. in 1979; the Lodge in Waynesville in 1982; and the Boundary Tree in Cherokee in 1984. He was also a partner inElGato'sinl986. The changes to the Riverhouse include the new deck, air conditioned dining rooms for private parties and business meetings, and a new menu. The new menu will feature Monte Cristo and Reuben Sandwiches, a full seafood dinner menu, and a variety of appetizers, such as oysters on the half-shell and potato skins. The Riverhouse Restaurant has good food and a nice atmosphere now, and with Jack's changes it will be even better in the near future.
