State and South Carolina, Division l-AA Powers The Citadel, Eastern Kentucky, Furman, ASU and Marshall. In four of Western's nine losses, 7 points or less decided the outcome. Marshall came-from- behind to beat the Cats by 7, The Citadel won by 6, UT-Chattanooga escaped by 5, and VMI pulled out the season finale by 4. The Cats record this season may not have been one of many victories, but every program has their down years and unfortunately this was a down year for WCU. The football team will make improvements during the off season, and footsteps will undoubtedly be heard from the Catamounts in 1989. Hats off to the coaches and players, because wins and losses should bear no comparision to effort Cats announce early signees Dave Possinger, WesternCarolina University's new head basketball coach, has announced the signing of two student/atheletes to the national-letter-of-intent during last week's early signing period. Both signees are currently high school seniors. The early signing period ends this Wednesday, November 16. The signees are 6-5 Robert Gaines who plays at West Iredell High in Statesville, NC and 6-6 Patrick Brown who plays at Suwannee High in Live Oak, PI. Gaines averaged 20 points and 8 rebounds along with 3 blocked shots, 3 assists, 3 steals as a junior. He was named to the 3-A foothills con ference all-star team and the All-northwest team last season. "Robert is a great athlete who can run, jump and shoot with the best we've seen in North Carolina," said Possinger. "He is playing inside for his team this season, but we project him as a perimeter player as he handles the ball well and is a fine outside shooter. I am sure everyone is going to be impressed with Robert as a player andasaperson. Heisfromafine family and has great work habits. Robert will be an integral part of our program," he added. Brown averaged 13.9 points and an eye-opening 13.2 rebounds and 2.5 blocked shots per game last winter. He has almost as impressive figures in his sophomore season when he scored at a 10.8 clip and averaged 12.3 rebounds and 2.1 blocks. He was named to several all-star teams after last season, including an all-conference, all region and all-area. "I'm not sure we could have signed a better athlete than Patrick Brown," stated Possinger. "He's got the talent and frame to be an outstanding Southern conference player, the strength of he game is around the boards, but he can also run the floor. Although he has high school grades and is a hard worker in the classroom, there is still a question on whether or not he will make his test scores to be eligible next season," he said. Withe one day left in the early signing period, Possinger said he had hopes of signing at least one more high school or junior college player.
