  • People The Western Carolinian Page 5 Thursday, January 21,1988 People in the News By Martha McAfee People Editor David M. Nichols David Nichols, artist In residence at WCU. has received a 1988 Fulbright Scholar Grant to develop ceramics and glass programs at two colleges in New Zealand. The purpose of the Fulbright Scholar Program is to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries through the exchange of students, teachers, lectures and research scholars. Nichols will give lectures and develop programs at Otago Polytechnic in Dunedin, a 4- year institution that offers the only full time ceramics program in New Zealand, and at Wanganui Regional Community College, which has the only hot-glass studio in the country. Nichols will also be a j consultant on curriculum development. Nichols graduated from the University of Wisconsin at River Falls, and he received a master of fine arts degree in ceramics and glass blowing from the University of Minnesota. Joe E. Beck, Franklin Carver, Randal Turpin Three faculty members in Western Carolina University's environmental health program revised and rewrote the Center for Disease Control's self-study course in environmental health sciences, the only entry-level training for environmental health professionals available nationwide. The WCU faculty involved in the yearlong project were Joe E. Beck, program director; Franklin Carver, assistant professor of health sciences; and Randal Turpin, assistant professor of health sciences and director of the Jackson County health department. The revision of" Environmental Health Sciences" involved writing over a thousand pages of text and accompanying questions. The course is designed for public health professionals who need a general knowledge of environmental health, because their work covers a range of duties from inspecting restaurants to dealing with solid waste and airborne diseases, according to Judy Gant of the CDC. The work by Beck, Carver and Turpin "was critical in keeping the course current, relevant and afloat, and the CDC had neither the resources nor the technical expertise to complete the revision," Gant said. "We undertook the project because we were concerned that people in the environmental health field were getting behind in technology," Beck said. About 1,000 sanitarians who are employed by local health departments and private companies in this country and abroad take the self-study course each year, and there is a waiting list for the new course. The CDC course is required by law for environmental health professionals working in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Louisiana. N.C. Teaching Fellows Two-Year Grants For College Juniors North Carolina is having more and more difficulty filling teaching positions in "hard-to-find" subject areas, such as math and science.
