TRACERS: A SHATTERING TREATMENT OF THE VIETNAM EXPERIENCE The University Players of WCU's Speech and Theater Arts Department open their Studio Theater Season with the electrifying and controversial production of TRACERS, a play originally conceived and written by John DiFusco, Vincent Caristi, Richard Chaves, Eric E. Emerson, Rick Gallavan, Merlin Marston, Harry Stephens, and Sheldon Lettich about the harsh realities of the Vietnam War and its aftermath. Tracers was written by a group o: Vietnam Veterans - which accounts for its exceptional vitality and force. The play is set before, during, and after the war, and the harsh language and harsher experiences of its memorable squad of soldiers lend it an authenticity that is rare in contemporary theater. Most Americans remember Vietnam, but only those who fought in it can take full measure of its horror. In TRACERS, that horror is brought directly to the audience, as its collective authors' experiences brilliantly adapted to the stage. Describing the play in Newsweek Magazine, Jack Kroll states: "Another play about the Viet- ... They had to fight their way into the record Industry. At first, major record companies turned them down for not having a gimmick, so they put out a single on their own label. They played a 90-show tour of England without a record contract and still managed to handle their day jobs. However, as soon as the Americans heard The Outfield's music, the result was incredible. The debut album. P/ay Deep, sold an astonishing 1.8 million copies and stayed on the charts nearly a year and a half. The album featured four singles including the top-20 "All the Love in the World" and "Your Love," which was a #6 single that stayed on the charts for over 20 weeks. The Outfield was voted the Top New Artists in 1986 in Playboy's Annual Review Reader's Poll, and were recognized as one of the top three new 1986 British bands in Rolling Stone's Reader's Poll. Cashbox named them Top New Group of the Year. Band members, Tony Lewis met Alan Jackman W'h&n they were bcth attending Sir John Cass Secondary School. Tony had taught himself to play guitar on a bass with only two strings. He would sit down every night for six months and pick out bass lines from a little Dansette mono record player. He then started a group with Alan, The Outfield's drummer. They then recruited John Spinks who attended the all-boys school across the street. The first title of the band was "The East Enders." The second time around, they became "The Baseball Boys." Eventually, reviewers from Melody Maker, Sounds, and New Musical Express saw the band and wrote them up. Melody Maker's Derek Oliver told his readers that any record executive that failed to sign The Outfield was insane. Spinks, Lewis, and Jackman acquired an American manager who suggested they change their name. In 1985. The Outfield had been playing to small crowds of 30-40 people. Then a drastic change came about when their album was released in America. The ,» left.: JOHN SPINKS, Tony LEXIS, and ftLAN JACKMAN.
