SGA?s Resolution 1189: A Correction By MARY ELLEN FLEMING News Editor In the September 17 It- sue of The Western Carolinian an article entitled "This Week In the SGA Senate" reported on the "Indefinite tabling" of resolution #1169 by the SGA Senate. We wish to again bring this matter to the attention of the student body and correct and clarify those points which were erroneously reported. The Editor Resolution # 1189 called for the divesture of any WCU funds invested In companies operating in South Africa which do not adhere to The Sullivan Principles. The Sullivan Principles call for equality in pay, hiring and facilities for all workers in U.S. companies in South Africa, regardless of the employee's race, creed, religion or national origin. Last week's article reported thatWCU had $100,000 invested in South Africa when In actuality, the amount is much smaller than this and they are indirect investments. WCU funds are held In U.S. investment accounts such as mutual funds. WCU has no direct Investment ties in South Africa, and funds are only indirectly linked through U.S. companies which may have South African operations (such as Coca-Cola), and which follow The Sullivan Principles. Chaired by Karen Brooks, the Senate committee designated to investigate resolution #1189 and Its proposals found the resolution to be Impotent, In that SGA action would be meaningless; since university policy al- News Briefs SBI DRUG BUSTS North Carolina airports, train depots, bus stations and highway rest areas will be the targets of a new State Bureau of Investigation squad aimed at attacking illegal drugs. Deputy Director Charles Dunn says the S.B.I. wants to create the illusion that they are everywhere, and if you bring drugs into North Carolina, authorities will be there. Five S.B.I, agents will form the new anti-smuggling unit, which should be pperatlonal In approximately a week. USAF JET SHOT DOWN BY NAVY The U.S. Navy reported that an Air Force reconnaissance jet was accidentally shot down by a Navy fighter during NATO exercises in the Mediterranean Sea Wednesday. Officials say two Air Force crewmen ejected safely. ready incorporated the resolutions suggestions by adhering to the Sullivan Principles in its indirect Investments, the resolution was deemed redundant. The Senate confirmed the committees findings and the resolution was Indefinitely tabled. In last week's article, the investigating committee was reported to have advised against divesture on the grounds that the WCU investment was minimal in comparison to the Investmants of other universities, and that WCU would lose athletic activity and academic scholarship funding that results from the Investment revenues. Brooks denied that the committee applied such reasoning in its recommendations. " I believe that the reporter did not comprehend the bill due to Its complexity," she said. "When conferring with Dr. Stillion he failed to satisfactorily gain an understanding of either the resolution or the school's policy in regard to investments in South Africa and the Sullivan Principles. The comment In the first article regarding student activity fees being increased was totally unfounded, unfactual and no such information was presented in the committee report to the Senate." Brooks further commented, "The Sept. 24 issue of the Western Carolinian portrayed the SGA in an unfavorable light, implying that we are Ineffective and lacking In backbone. The SGA Is currently working on proposals that would make more classes available and accessible to handicapped students. We are In the process of getting more campus telephones Installed In all school buildings, and placing a stamp machine and another mailbox on campus." POPE'S VISIT COSTLY Roman Catholic Church officials In San Francisco say that last week's visit by Pope John Paul II has left the city's achdiocese one million dollars In debt. Church officials say a second collection was taken up this past Sunday In an effort to wipe out the debt. Other dioceses that hosted parts of the recent papal tour owe money as a result of the trip. IRANIAN SHIP CAPTURED LAYING MINES The U.S. Administration says it has plenty of evidence to show the Iranian ship attacked by the U.S. Tuesday night was laying mines in the Persian Gulf, But Iran's president called the U.S.'s account "a pack of Hes." He vowed Iran would avenge the attack. Pentagon sources say the U.S. is responding to the threat with a warning to American military bases around the world to stay alert for terrorist activity. The State Department says it has notified all diplomatic posts that U.S. interests are now seen to be "at greater risk."
