  • The Western Carolinian 11 April 10, 1987 SPYING. The position that received the most attention, especially since the runoff was declaired on April 1, was the office of President of the Student Government Association. According to the elections' commission, 1,287 students voted giving Everett Colby 718 and Chris Geis 569 votes. Both candidates were well gualified for the position and both felt that every student should vote for the leaders of this important student organization. Geis stated that "win or lose I've had so much fun today that I am glad that I went through it, Being out here on the lawn today, with my friends and supporters, eating ice cream, talking to everyone, getting some sun- it's been a super time. We had beautiful weather, and I'm real proud of the student body for its turnout." Colby said that "this week of campaigning has taken more out of me than finals' week. I put a lot of effort into trying to convince the students of Western Carolina University that I was a qualified candidate for the office of President of the Student Government Association. I feel that I gave an effort of 150 percent and, win, lose, or draw, I feel I am more a part of the university. I want to thank all those students who came out and supported me. I (will) do as much for the students at some time in the future." President Cliff Clark stated that "as in any political contest, ..from page one sides are drawn as candidates seek to exert their influence over the voters. The end of this contest has resulted in a new beginning for the students in terms of the leadership of the Student Government Association. I have the utmost respect for Everett and the confidence that he can maintain a positive influence in his tenure as President." All of the candidates are to be congratulated, as one student observer said. "They took a chance by putting their names on the ballot. This alone makes them all winners in spirit." This student also felt that the students who ^came out and voted in 'overwhelming numbers also deserve congratulations. "This shows that students here care about their school and want to be a part of the process in making a change for the betterment of Western. All 1,287 students are winners. They took the initiative and come out to the University Center to vote for their favorite candidates. "As all campaigns go, there are winners and there are losers. But I feel that after the political action quiets down for the yera, the candidates will resume their friendships with each other and will work for the benefit of the student body," he concluded. In closing, President Clark said it best when he said, "I would like to thank all the voters for showing such great concern for the future of their University as evidenced by the great number of voters who turned out in this election. I hope the ice cream hit the spot!" You can choose to honestly communicate your thoughts and feelings or you can choose to not express them. In some situations, the most prudent thing to do may not be to communicate honestly. You will want to assess the consequences of asserting yourself, both immediate and long-term. For example, in a situation with a friend, you may avoid some immediate unpleasantness by not asserting yourself but you could also jeopardize the relationship in the long run if you refuse to assert yourself and then feel taken advantage of over and over again. So there are risks involved and each situation is different. Types of Assertion: There are some definite skills to becoming a more assertive person. Lange and Jakubowski, Responsible Assertive Behavior (1976) talk about several different types of assertion. 1) Basic assertion is a simple, straightforward expression of your beliefs, feelings, or opinions. It is usually a simple "I want" or "I feel" statement. 2) Empathic assertion conveys some sensitivity to the other person you are interacting with. It usually contains two parts, the first being a recognition of the other person's situation or feelings followed by a statement in which you stand up for your rights. An example might be: "I know you have really been busy. But I want to feel like our .relationship is important to you. I want you to make (time for me and for us." 3) Escalating assertion occurs when the other person fails to respond to your basic assertion and continues to violate your rights. You gradually escalate the assertion and become increasingly firm. It may even include the mention of some type of action taken only after several basic assertive statements are ignored: "If you don't conplete the work on my car by 5:00 tomorrow, I'll be forced to call the Better Business Bureau." 4) l-Language assertion is especially useful for expressing negative feelings. It involves a four-part statement: -- When you do... (specifically describe the behavior) --The effects are... (describe how the behavior concretely affects you) - I feel... (describe your feelings) -- I prefer... (describe what you want) The real focus here is on the "I feel", "I want", part of the statement. An example follows: "When you didn't meet me at the library like you said you would, I couldn't complete my part of our project. I feel hurt and angry with you. Next time, I'd like you to follow through when you agree to work with me." The tendency here is to blame the other person, fly off the handle, and get caught up in the anger. I- Language assertion can help you to focus that anger and be clear about your own feelings. But don't get caught up in saying the words exactly as they are here. The important part is focusing on how the other person's action affects you, how you feel, and what you want them to do differently. Obviously, a brief article is not sufficient to counter the difficulties many of us have with assertion. Assertion demands more than the rote learning of a set of communication skills. The difficulty comes in actual interaction with other people, when our anxiety is high and emotions are stirred up. Practice is the essential ingredient. In the beginning, don't try changing your behavior in loaded situations or ones that are very important to you Practice first in the least risky situations. Let others, especially people close to you, know that you are trying to assert yourself. Often, people get used to having you respond in certain ways and it is very confusing, sometimes threatening, for them to see you behave differently. Enlist their help; ask them for feedback on how you're doing. In the long run, communicating honestly can help your relationship.
