  • The Western Carolinian 7 Thursday, February 19, 1987 On the Air with Power 91 Photographic Memories WWCU's Southern Bell A unique and beautiful collection of photographs by Baldwin Lee, is on display in the Belk Building gallery until March 4. Lee takes us on a journey to the "other side of the tracks" as he explores the lives of blacks in small rural towns of the American South. The hopes, dreams and fears of life in such places as Waterproof, Louisiana, and Quitman, Georgia are conveyed by the photographer through his sensitivity to his subjects' environment, posessions and relationships. "Photographs are interesting in what they are about - what they mean - is very rarely the same as what they are of" says Lee. It is the underlying structure of the photographs that make them so revealing. A pair ot pre-school graduation diplomas and mortar boards hung on a wall, constant references to faith and God along with the bright eyes and smooth soft skin of babies lend a certain optimism to the collection. The photographs stray away from a pure documentary style and verge on the fantastic. The luminescence and textures of his subjects gives the photos an otherworldly feel. In the photographers words, "Although photographs seem to be defined by literalism, they are more similar to works of fiction where what is being described may seduce you info believing that it is actually true." QUIN Theatres 586-5918 Zilphia sitting atop her (Edwin Carlton Photo) 'black bulletproof tank. Zilphia Thomas is a senior from Lincolnton, NC. She is also a self- proclaimed "ham". Thomas began her entertainment career at the tender age of five. She gave many live performances (singing into a hairbrush) to packed livingroomseverywhere. Asyoucan tell, putting a grin on peoples' faces and in their hearts, is one of Thomas' true pleasures in life. Thomas, who has a dual major in RTV and Journalism, is the News and Public Affairs Director at WWCU. She is also the station's hostesson "91 FM Expressions" and the "Cullowhee Countdown." Thomas became enthralled with broadcasting on herfirst visit to a radio and television station while she was in high school. Thomas says "From that moment, I knew that broadcasting was the place for me, and I have been with it ever since." When she transferred to WCU two years ago she began working at Power 91. She has enjoyed many roles at the station, from playing "Hazel the Maid" to her current on air personalities. According to Thomas, one of her most pressing obligations has been to rid herself of her most prominent southern accent. An accent which is the cause of her being dubbed "the mouth of the south." Outside of the radio station, Thomas is known for driving the large black "tank" she refers to as her automobile and as President of the WCU chapter of Alpha Epsilon Rho National Braodcasting Society. Alpha Epsilon Rho is sponsoring next month's Air Band '87 and Thomas urges everyone to attend. Or as she puts it "Ya'll come... Ya' hear." In the future, Thomas hopes to find herself hosting her own talk show. With Thomas's love of braodcasting, coupled with her "gift of the gab" it would certainly be a career which combines the best of both of her worlds. Not to mention her obvious talents. Thomas's other ambitions, besides toning down her accent, include learning how to drive a small car and having her own male harem. (Edwin Carlton Photo) The, Underground Empire Author and journalist James Mills' latest literary effort is being touted as "a mammoth, compelling investigative report, a gripping narrative, and a stunning achievement." The "Underground Empire" is the culmination of five years of eyewitness accounts and interviews with the kingpins of the narcotics inaustry. James Mills offers a staggering account of the alliance between the narcotics industry and world governments. "The Underground Empire," a New York Times bestseller for nine weeks, will be released in paperback by Dell Books in August '87. Dell's mass-market edition of "The Underground Empire" will contain never-before-published documents exposing the drug- world as it really exists. James Mills' revelations will be the topic of an upcoming episode of ABC's news program 20/20. ABC is also producing a 10-hour mini- series based on this intriguing book.
