  • Western Carolinina/March 7, 1985 IFC Attends Leadership Academy By Carl Brickman Staff Reporter An Interfraternity Council coalition consisting of eight men recently represented Western Carolina University at the Southeastern Interfraternity Council Leadership Academy of 1985 in the Omni of Atlanta, Georgia, held February 2124. Four IFC officers who attended were President Alan Howard of Lambda Chi AlDha, Vice- Gillette Selected As Nominee for Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship Cullowhee-Aaron Kenneth Gillette, a senior biology major from Winter Haven , Fla., has been selected as the Western Carolina University nominee for one of 50 national graduate fellowships awarded by the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. The Phi Kappa Phi Fellowships are for $6,000 in support of the first year of graduate work. He was nominated by the WCU Phi Kappa Phi chapter. Gillette earned national notoriety as a freshman in 1982 when his science project was selected to fly on NASA's fifth space shuttle mission. Since then, Gillette has maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average at WCU. He has applied to graduate school at Princeton and Cornell universities and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He plans to continue his studies in cellular biology through the doctoral level and hopes for a career as a professor at a research university. Gillette is a recipiant of a WCU Patrons of Quality Scholarship and Merril Lynch Scholarship. He has served as president of the WCU biology and astronomy clubs and as vice- president of the Mortar Board honor society. He is a member of the Dean's Advisory Committee for the School of Arts and Sciences, a student representative on the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools self-study committee, and has been named to Who's Who Among American College Students. He and his wife, Jeneine, live I in Moore Hall at WCU. Phi Kappa Phi was founded jn 1897 to promote the pursuit of excellence in all fields ot higer education. Western Carolina has had one winner of the highly competitive national fellowships; Frances Owle Smith of Whittier earned one in 1983, and she is in medical school at the Univesity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Farwell to Give Voice Recital Cullowhee--Dr. Joyce Farwell, professor of voice at Western Carolina University, will give a vocal recital Tuesday, March 19, at 8 p.m. in the recital hall of WCU's Music-English Building. Lee Thompson, former faculty member at Baylor University who is completing a doctorate in musical arts at the Cincinnati Conservatory, will be accompanist. President Brian Lineberger of Sigma Phi Epsilon, Executive Secretary Jeff Gibson of Delta Sigm Phi and Treasurer Danny Batten of Sigma Nu. The other four representatives of the WCU IFC were Kevin Morris of Pi Lambda Phi, Pat Trammel of Kappa Alpha, Mike Norman of Delta Sigma Phi, and Ben Wright of Sigma Nu. The theme of the Academy was "Developing Leadership Through Involvement." 425 IFCs attended the Academy, making up the four regions of the Southeast. The representatives elected a president and vice-president, one presiding over each region. The new president is Andy Aldsman, a Lambda Chi Alpha from the University of Georgia, and this region's vice-president is Kevin McClure, a Sigma Phi Epsilon brother from James Madison. McClure will head approximately 75 schools. Many topics were discussed and taught by various IFC advisors from schools throughout the nation. Among these topics were leadership development, IFCs role in assisting weak fraternities, legal liabilities, dry rush, Greek Week, alcohol awareness, making IFC more affective, academic programming, "Hazing on Trial," image building, little sisters and their roles, and the relationships of Greeks within university life. According to President Howard, Western Carolina IFC will benefit tremendously because of a more complete understanding of its function for the benefit of WCU. Ideas for Greek Week have been obtained, and good relations between individuals have become enhanced. Ideas for the Panhellenics of WCU (the "Sorority IFC") have also evolved. Audrey McAllister, a Phi Mu, is president of the Panhellenic organization that is, according to Howard, not only very well organized, but it also maintains a higher overall QPR than the average for female students. IFC and the Panhellenic Council are forming a better relationship, each sending a representative to the other's meetings. Both work well together and are planning exciting Greek functions for this spring and for next year. Campus Ministries to Sponsor Educational A ctivities This year, the WCU Campus Ministries will once again sponsor several days of educational activities to help raise consciousness about the widespread problem of Hunger in the world. The activities will run from March 22 to March 25. The theme this year is: Who Will Feed the Hungry? Part of the World Hunger Observance will be a trip to Atlanta to experience first hand what it is like to work in a soup kitchen and to meet the poor face to face. This has proven to be a very valuable experience for all students who have participated in the past. Students will leave WCU Friday afternoon, March 22, and return Saturday afternoon, March 23. Any student interested in this activity should contact their campus ministers or Wanda Kidd at the BSU. Monday, March 25th, facts concerniong World Hunger will abound in the WCU dining halls byway of information boxes on the tables, placemats, and intercom announcements. Then Monday evening, singer- composer Gary Rand will give a concert dedicated to the problem of World Hunger at the Baptist Student Union. The conert will begin at 8:00 p.m., preceded by a videotape entitled "The Four Myths of Hunger."Admission to the concert is free and open toall interested persons. A donation of one can of food is welcomed, but not necessary for admission. admission. It is hoped that all students at WCU will take this opportunity to become more informed about and sensitive to the plight of hungry of the world. Agony of the Sun! "Sunburn," "sunrash," "sun poisoning"--no matter what name you give it, the agony is very much the same. You burn; you sting; you itch; in short, you HURT! The really bad news is that there isn't too much you can do about it. Sunburn is the inevitable consequence of overexposure to the sun, and like the common cold, there is no miracle cure known. Time, patience, and whatever you personally find "feels good" to apply topically is our recommendation. If itching is a major problem, you may benefit from the short term use of an antihistamine that may be bought over-the-counter at the pharmacy or obtained from the infirmarv. Asprin or tylenol may be helpful in relieving some of the discomfort. The infirmary, however, doen not provide sun burn lotion or creams. If your burn is to the degree that you have considerable swelling of eyelids and face or if you have large water-filled blisters a visit to the doctor may be in order. This is fortunately not often the case. Another consideration to keep in mind when dealing with the rash and/or itch of sunburn is the possibility you may be getting some reaction to the suntan oil or lotion you are using. To avoid possible allergic reaction to perfumes or dyes used in suntan preparation, you might consider using plain mineral oil. The idea' of any oil or lotion is simply to keep the skin from drying, although sunscreens offer some protection from the ultraviolet rays of the sun. The best way to prevent sunburn is to gradually increase exposure time. There is no such thing as a one (1) day suntan. Any question you may have concerning this will be answered, if you call us at 227-7430 or 227- 7431. Clinic hours are 9-5pm, Monday through Friday although a Registered Nurse is on duty 24 hours a day.
