For the past several presidential elections, fewer and fewer people have turned out to elect the chief executive of what used to be considered by most people as the world's most powerful and influential country. Social scientists and political observers seem to contribute what is being termed as "voter apathy" to two interrelated reasons, one of which is alienation in the sociological sense. The other, which to me seems a little more recognizable and less esoteric, is simply the lack of a viable choice in candidates - a phenominon which was written about during the first while of the current presidential campaign. But now, after the recent statements and debates, it takes on a new aspect. (Incidentally, if the League of Women Voters wants to call it a debate, fine. Bui let the candidates perform in the classical format of a debate.) Both the behavior and the statements o! Governor Carter and President Ford in the past two weeks have cast a cloud on the quality and indeed the qualifications of the candidates. ThCy have waffled, mispoken themselves (to use Nixon's terms), slung nail-studded mud, and in general have come to a new low in candidate behavior. Alexis de Tocqueville, after visiting the United States during Andrew Jackson's administration, observed that "In that immense crowd which throngs the avenues to power in the United States, I found very few men who displayed that ... independence of opinion which frequently distinguished the Americans in former times, and which constitutes the leading feature in distinguished characters wherever they may be found." Finally, he very astutely observed that "It seems at first sight as if the minds of the Americans were formed upon one model so accurately, they follow the same route." Does it really make any difference who wins the election? I would like to think so but Tocqueville's words keep ringing an alarm bell in my mind. iiiMiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimiiiimiim minim New Now Open!
