  • 8 Western Carolinian/February 3,1983 Lady Cats Break Record On January 28 in Berea. Kentucky. WCI"s Lad) Cats rewrote the record books. WCU, led by six players in double figure scoring broke the old scoring record set this season against Gardner-Webb on December 7 of 115 points, witha point total of 119 against Berea. Also, there is a possibility of a new record of an amazing 68.4f',' from the floor. Tammy Laster led the scoring, contributing 17 points. Serena Sunatt bagged 7 of 7 field goals, for a total of 14 points, and made 6 rebounds. Coach Jud) Stroud of WCU praised Sin rail's effort as "exceptional shooting." Ginger Eichhorncontributed 9 total points and was 4 of 4 in field goals. Coach Stroud called the Berea win. "positive, all of the girls did well, and e\ery body scored." Ihe final score in Berea was 119-58. The Lady Cats played again on January 29 against Marshall in Huntington, West Virginia. Unfortunately for Marshall the Lady Cats of WCU were on a roll and were determined to bring home another win. Along with a good defense and 5095 shooting from the floor, Marshall did not stand a chance. The Marshall win would become WCU's first ever Southern Conference win. Coach Stroud called the evening "exciting, we were on the road for 8 hours and it was a preliminary game for the men, and it was our first ever Southern Conference win!" Scoring was lead by Eichhorn with 15, contributing also some key rebounds. Stroud praised Eichhorn's performance calling (linger"physically aggressive."Judy Green was also cited for her defensive play. Green added II points, Surrat't 12, and Teresa Braswell 10. At the end of the night final scoring was 78-55. Hoping to continue their roll for victory WCU met UNC-A's lady Bulldogs, Monday, January 31 in Reid Gym. Before an unimpressive home crowd of 300, the Lady Cats defeated UNC-A 69-56. The Lady Bulldogs are now 17-7 overall and are led by Sheila Ford from Clarjcton, NC. Ford led UNC-A shooting with 18 points. And because of a sluggish first half. Coach Stroud felt "fortunate to be tied at the end of the first half." However, due to a better defensive attack on the perimeter and a good job of utilizing the press, UNC-A was forced into 25 turnovers. Stroud praised Green's efforts as doing "a fine job. she was a key player, and a dominating factor." Green was 10 for 16 field goals, had 6 assists, 4rebounds, and shot a total of 23 points. According to Stroud the Lady Cats were "mentally down, or maybe they were too keyed up in the first half, but the second round was the best round of basketball they have played. 1 hope they continue on in spirit, becoming more positive and reaching their potential." by Karen Ashe On Wednesday, February 2 WCU plays Appalachian, which is a Southern Conference game. This season the Lady Mountaineers have played 3 of the top 20 schools in the nation. I hey have won 2 of 16 games before the meeting with WCU. The leading scorer for Appalachian is Meana Cusimano who is averaging 11.2 points per game. A great deal ot the team was lost to graduation, making the team relatively young and inexperienced. Out of the 29 meetings between WCU and Appalachian, Appalachian has taken 16 and WCU 13, and last year was a split with WCU defeating Appalachian in Boone 66-64, and Appalachian faking WCU in Cullowhee 68-64. The game will be a preliminary for the men's game between the men of Appalachian and I I -Chattanooga. ■ The Lady Cats continue their winning ways with a win over UNC-Asheville. Congrads...keep up the good work. New Baseball Coach: Jack Leggett Western Carolina, after near misses at the Southern Conference baseball championship the past two seasons, will try to grab the brass ring this spring with its third coach in as many seasons. Jack leggett. who built Vermont into a New England power, moved south last fall with an immediate goal ol leading the Catamounts to their first NCAA regional berth. Ironically, Western Carolina and Vermont are the only schools in the nation which have the Catamount as their nickname and mascot. Leggett, 28. knows what it takes to make it to postseason play as he captained the 1976 Maine squad that finished fourth in the College World Series. Western Carolina has won 53 games the past two seasons with a 24-8 Southern Conference record. The Catamounts, tinder Bill Haywood, tied for the regular season title in 1981 but were denied a trip to the NCAA regionals when they lost in a three-way play off. Haywood resigned in May, 1981, after 13 seasons, to become assistant director of player development for the Seattle Mariners. David Wright was the interim replacement and guided Western to a 28-12 record and a second place- finish in the conference standings. Leggett has arranged an impressive 53-game schedule for the upcoming season that includes three teams who reached NCAA regional play last season— South Carolina, The Citadel and Ohio State. Also on the slate are up-and-coming Georgia Tech, perennial ACC power Clemson, Georgia. Tennessee, Wake Forest, Ohio University and 14 Southern Conference games. Leggett has a strong nucleus to build around, including an outfield that accounted for 17 home runs, 101 rbiand a .326 batting average while committing only three errors. Heading the list of returnees is all-star left fielder Mel Kinsey, a senior who owns a .347 career batting average, 24 home runs and 111 rbi. Only one starting infielder returns, third baseman Matt Thrasher, but sophomore shortstop John Pust (.429 average in 18 games) and junior DH/ first baseman Charlie Fonville (.327 average with 7 home runs) are better than adequate replacements. In addition, leggett recruited several impressive infielders. Senior Greg Johnson shared catching duties the past two seasons and batted .380 last year. Several proven arms return to the pitching staff and will be joined by an impressive group of rookies and transfers. Senior Greg Moore (5-0; 2.67 ERA) appears to be the ace of the staff with David Ray Robinson back in the bullpen after compiling 14 saves and a sparkling verage over the past two seasons. Also returning will be Ken Hare (5-2) and Lin Stadler. New Football Sign Ups A t WCU A pair of Atlanta area high school football standouts who were mid-year graduates have enrolled at Western Carolina University. Trent Wirtz, a quarterback, and Billy Ray Jones, a fullback-linebacker, enrolled at WCU this week and will participate in the Catamounts' off-season football practice sessions which will begin the last week of February. Earlier this month. Bob Waters, WCU's head football coach, announced the signing of two junior college transfers - defensive tackle Kirk Woods and wide receiver Jon DeVlarch - and prep school product Lloyd Barron, a tight end. Those three also enrolled at WCU this week and will participate in spring practice. Wirtz, a 6-21/2, 195 pound product of Walton High in Marie.tta, Georgia, is expected to compete with Willie Perkins and Jeff Gilbert, WCU's only two holdovers at quarterback from last season, for the Catamounts'signal calling duties for the 1983 season. Wirtz is regarded as one of the finest running quarterbacks ever recruited by Waters' staff. He accounted for over 1,200 yards of offense and 14 touchdowns last season at Walton High. Jones, a rugged 6-0, 197 pounder, led Buford (Ga.) High in rushing (962 yards, 11 TD's) and defensive points (84 tackles, 67 assists). "Trent impressed us with his size, leadership and mobility and, naturally, has the arm needed to make our pass-oriented offense go," said Waters of his quarterback recruit. "Billy Ray is a tough, aggressive player who we are projecting as a fullback," said Waters of Jones. Bits and Pieces... by Russ Randolph 106 basketball teams!!
