  • Editorial Observations by E. G. Rhett "It is better to be beautiful than to be good. But...it is better to be good than to be ugly." Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray. Having had some small successes as a schoolboy athlete, along with some rather impressive academic accomplishments, I received a Rhodes Scholarship for study in the Pembroke College of Oxford University, located in the midlands of Great Britain. 1 lived there and studied in tutorials for upwards of two years, pursuing my degree of a Bachelor of Arts in non-industrial sciences. Meanwhile, I enjoyed learning the British style of sports, both Soccer and Rugby, each of which are rather trying sports since no padding, helmets, or tobacco- spitting equipment is allowed to be worn by any of the players and the action is practically continuous through the divisions of the game. But I learned a larger lesson from the trials than merely the rules and notions of playing well—that of the difference between a concern for open-hearted, sheer-fun sportsmanship, and that obligatory (as it seems) demand for American commercialism. Of course everyone exploits sports for commercial purposes-our British ancestors taught us how to do it. In America we begin it in the grade-schools, not only on the collegiate level. It is not only football and basketball programs that we reward with tremendous sums of money, but such activities (as I recall them) as tennis, golf, and even frisbee throwing, all once innocent pastimes, are now money-grubbing activities. What will be next? Sexual pleasure has already made it in certain movies, magazines, and stage plays. Hockey, ping-pong, hand-ball, and billiards, along with bowling—all are now just money games. What is our lovely Mountain Homeliness Day (MHD) meant to prove? Why else would the High Foreman be bothered to offer us these games, unless to comfort us? What is next? Ice-skating, hang-gliding, and marble- shooting have already capitulated to the money interests. Drugs and alcohol abuse abound amongst our professional athletes. What is next? Backgammon and Chess players have now gone professional. Our local sports teams, even the spitters of tobacco juice, are little more than mental midgets and they do not perform very well, at that! What price does inglory require? What is next? Tiddleywinks, anyone? How about a beauty contest? Who would apply from among the buffaloes of our campus ladies?
