  • Sports photos by Rick McDaniel Cats Fall To Keydets by DOUG IRWIN Playing inspired ball in the second half behind the running of tailback Melvin Dorsey, Western Carolina rallied but fell short of the VMI Keydets, 21-14. Dorsey did not play most of the first half because of an ankle- injury he sustained in the ECU game, but he came back in the second half to score both Catamount touchdowns VMI took an early 14-0 lead in the first half. The first touchdown came on a 51 yard drive and concluded on Floyd Allen's one yard burst on fourth down. Allen finished the day with 164 yards on 44 carries. The Keydets second touchdown came on a defensive miscue by Western Carolina. The Cats sent the whole defense except the secondary in on a blitz, but VMI quarterback Kelly Raber scrambled and found Carl Showaltar wide open. Showalter ran the remaining 56 yards to give the Keydets a commanding 14-0 advantage. While VMI's offense was putting points on the scoreboard, Western's offense was struggling to cross the 50 yard line. The Cat offense only gained 68 yards in the entire first half. Coach Bob Waters said "our offense was totally inept in the first half. 1 can't explain that." The second half was a completely different game, basically bacause Melvin Dorsey started. Early in the third quarter, Dorsey took a pitchout from Ronnie Mixon and outran the whole VMI defense for a 60 yard touchdown. Dorsey's second touchdown came on an almost identical play, but this time he ran 69 yards for the score. The Catamounts got a big break when VMI fumbled an Eddie McGill punt on the VMI 25 yard line, but the could not capitalize on it. Western got down to the VMM yard line, but the Keydets stopped Dorsey on fourth down and took over the ball. The Cats had one more chance to score when they moved to the Keydet 31, but Dorsey fumbled the ball away and sealed the victory for VMI. Even though the Cats lost their second consecutive game, the second half of the VMI game was quite promising. Western outgained VMI 208 to 99 yards in the second half. The defense also came to life in the final 30 minutes. "Our defense did a pretty fair job in the second half," said Waters. Take away one play (56 yard screen pass that went for a TD) and they played well enough to win." Of course, "Mr. Offense", Melvin Dorsey was a positive note. He gained 159 yards on only 12 carries against VMI. His two game totals are 269 yards on 32 carries. Dorsey was also the leading reciever last week with 4 receptions for 37 yards. 1 he Catamount passing game was oil target for the second straight game Quarterback Ronnie Mixon completed onl\ 9 passes for 7X yards touch Waters had some haish comments about the ill passing game.
