Dr. Stuart Kaplan 586-2483 Little Concern by LAURA HUNT Staff Writer The Cullowhee business community has shown a general lack of concern about any competition which may emerge as a result of the new highway running due west of the Western Carolina University campus. Although there has been a move to this area, general opinion seems to have it that no great impact will be felt for at least the next few months. A telephone survey of some of the businesses of the area yielded anx>verall impression of lack of concern. When questioned on the impact of the new highway, Joel Tigner, manager of Speedy's Pizza, said, "It's hard to say right now. There might be some impact if there were other businesses on the highway to compete with, but everyone knows that Cullowhee is really on this side." One business which has already opened up shop on the west side of the highway is Cullowhee Real Estate. Owner Bill Cowan also agreed that it was too early to make any concrete judgements on impact. Said Cowan, "All of the businesses are on the east side (of Cullowhee). We might be able to tell better when the Quik Stop opens up." The Quik Stop is a gas station/convenience store which is currently under construction. Several others surveyed either were of the same general opinion or had no opinion to offer. Consequently, it is assumed that the move west will be a slow one. The Cullowhee business community, at least, seems to be in no hurry to move.
