  • Waste Troubles A random thought passed through this writer's mind last week while tending to the garden. In all that lush vegitation (watered from a hose no doubt) my thoughts turned to all those chemical spills, Love Canals, and toxic wastes-those things which are the bane of health, life and the green things I'd been working in. It serves to reason that rather than dumping the majority of these chemical wastes they should be made a part of the increasing recycling effort underway. Most plant managers would probably scoff at such an idea, their wastes being classified now as "economically unrecoverable." That's where the flaw lies in present thinking. Most chemicals CAN be made into useful substances. "But that costs big money," say the industrialists. And, I'm sure, it certainly does. But the fact remains that it costs money to clean up a Love Canal; it takes time and man power to clean up a spill; and time, man power, AND money to pay for toxic waste law suits. Add the cost of "one's good name—tarnished" and it's no doubt cheaper. True efficiency—something readily recgnized in the garden and not a bad idea in the industrial circle. Local Canoers Win John Zubizarretta, an English professor at Western, and Robert Harkness, Manager of Cullowhee Outfitters, won the Men's C-2 class championship slalom at the U.S. National Championship held June 29 on the Nantahala River. 25 other teams from as far away as New York competed in the Championships. The duo posted a winning time of 5:17 on the quarter mile course, while losing only ten seconds to penalty points, which ranged from five to fifty seconds. The winning time was nearly a full minute ahead of the second place team. Fritz Orr of Cashiers, a Western student, won the men's C-l Slalom Championships. John and Maggie Zubizaretta added another secnd place finish to their 1979 showing in the C-2 division of the bi-annual event. Earlier in the year Zubizaretta and Harkness won the N.C. Open Canoe Championship held on the Tuckaseegee River.
