February 11, 1982/ 8 Cokely, Green Named Players Of The Week by Russ Randolph photo by Doug Cavanah Judy Green out maneuvers an Appalacian player in the game last Saturday night while going on to score 11 points in the game. Representing the Cats is freshman standout CEDRIC COKELY, a 6'6" Greensboro native who might just be the most impressive freshman recruited by the Cats in a few years. "Our recent bench play has to be a factor in our last three wins," said Catamount Head Coach Steve Cottrell, "and Cedric Cokely has been the spark in our bench that we've needed, playing as consistent as any player on our team." Indeed, Cokely's play has ben a winning factor for the Cats in the last three games. Against Appalachian, UT-Chattanooga, and Davidson, he had a three-game total of 27 points. 17 of those coming against Davidson Monday night. Under the boards Cedric has pulled down 15 rebounds in the last three outings, and has hit 8 of 11 from the floor. On the foul line he has hit 11 of 14 shots, 9 of those coming in the Davidson game Monday night. In comparison to other team members, Cokely ranks fifth in scoring for the Cats with 136 points, a 6.5 point average per game, while only playing 16.9 minutes per outing. Against Davidson, he averaged a point a minute with 17 points in 17 minutes of playing time, which is again, impressive. He now has 15 steals, 3 blocked shots, 25 assists, and 60 rebounds in 21 games. "I'm looking forward to the remainder of the season," said Cokely after the Davidson game, which he taged "my best game of the year." "We're starting to play our style of basketball, and 1 feel we've got a clean shot at the title," he added. "We've got to continue playing our best and hope the other teams are unprepared for our style. 1 don't see anyone stopping us." As the representative for the Lady Cats, the nominations rolled in this week for JUDY GREEN, a 5'4" sophomore from nearby Waynesville. "Judy has been one of our most consistent players of the season," said Lady Cat Coach Judy Stroud. "She always seems to be at the right place at the right time, and is explosive on offense and defense. 1 look for her to be a real aset to our team as the season draws to a close, and in the years to come," Stroud added. Indeed, Judy's play has been outstanding in the last few games, as it has been all season. In the Appalachian game Saturday night, for example, she hit 4 of 9 from the floor, 3 of 3 from the foul line, had 2 rebounds, and 11 total points which was the second highest for her team. Upon receiving player of the week. Green said that she hoped her team would "pick back up" as tournament time rolls around, and that she hopes to "continue giving it my all," as the season winds down. Upon receiving player of the week selection, each player will receive a written certificate of congratulations from the Carolinian in honor of their efforts.
