Station manager Rob Ellen told the UCLA Press that this will be a huge blow to the students and to us up at the 300 watt beacon." Ellen also mentioned that "U90.5 will not be on the air until late April because of the red tape associated with insurance." The Cullowhee Fire Department responded to the call from the station at 2:00 Tuesday. When the trucks arrived, the programming booth was ablaze, but fortunately, no one was injured. Fire Chief Smoky Bush said, "When the tower went, so did the transformers and wiring associated with transmission." Repairs to the station will have to wait until February, according to sources in the administration. We at the UCLA Press regret that our competition has been blown off the air. Next semester, until radio programming resumes, we will publish the American Top 40 list as a weekly feature. Rugby Showdown The controversial Springbok rugby team from South Africa, the team that nearly set off a world war last year, will be visiting Cullowhee for the first time ever. The infamous Springboks, who ensued multiple riots during their last American tour in 1982, have toned down their act considerably since Roots hit the shores of South Africa. The Springboks will be testing a relatively young and inexperienced University of Cullowhee Left of Asheville team. Since this is only the second year of existence for the UCLA rugby team, coach O'Malcolm O'Mally has only two experienced rugby players on the team. "We had to canvas campus to find some chaps who wanted to knock some heads," says the big O. "We convinced a few football players to play, and filled out the roster with some students seeking financial aid," he added. A large battery of Russian and American strike force units will be mobilized in the rugged mountains surrounding Cullowhee. To deter unwanted protests and riots, the date and site of the contest will not be announced until the match is over. Since this relatively insignificant game has blown up into a proving grounds for these two superpowers, the match will be televised on the local cable monopoly. * Plaza to Open Joyner Plaza, including such franchises as Winn Dixie. McDonalds, and Dollar Stores, will be open for business January 19. 1985. Although campus officials originally planned to build a memorial to the Joyner Building that was destroyed by fire early in 1981, the idea fell through because of lack of support from financial backers.' In the end. we had to put pride on the back burnerand go for the bucks.' said an undisclosed university official.' However, each building will be constructed with a brick or two from the original Joyner Building.' from page 7 The Office of Traffic and Security asks the people who have pitched tents in Whitmire Stadium to please remove them for the rugby match this weekend. Crunch, WAM head, was clearly ecstatic about swinging the Stones concert. 'This is really great. This is going to put Cullowhee on the map once and for all." When asked if he really believed the Rolling Stoned would show up in Cullowhee, Crunch said, "I doubt it:" "We did not even set up a date for the show." laughed Mad. In response to the question of what foreign country Crunch would flee to when the twenty-five to thirty thousand Stoned fanatics realized the same, Mad just said, "Somewhere where they still have Defender and Pac- Man." Merry Christmas, folks. We were caught in the throes of a slow newsweek, so we decided to go ahead and throw a little humor in as a holiday gift. Nothing on the two pages consisting of this special section should be regarded in a serious light, or believed at all, for that matter. So enjoy yourself over the break, and best wishes for a happy 1982 from the staff of the Western Carolinian. VWftft+VWWWWWWVWIrWWVr^^
