  • Western Carolinian November 19, 1981 Voice of the Students Vol. XLVI Issue 13 Photo by Rick McDaniel Library Addition On Schedule For those involved with the new addition to Hunter Library on campus, there was good news this week. That news being that construction of the new library addition is progressing well and best of all, is right on schedule. Thus, anticipation for moving into the new building during the Christmas break is becoming a reality. Hunter Library will officially close its doors to the public at 6:00 p.m. Friday, December 18. The library will be closed for the purpose of moving into the new addition from Saturday, December 19th through Sunday. January 17th. 1982. If all proceeds on schedule, the library will resume its regular schedule and functions on Monday, January 18. 1982. The move of course, will cause some complications to the publicand will inconvenience studentsand faculty somewhat. However, this will only be temporary. Faculty members wishing to have materials placed on reserve for any of their courses here on campus as well as at Asheville, are being asked by the library personel to give their lists of materials to the Circulation Department no later than Friday. December 4th. This will insure that the reserve materials will be ready for use by the first week of the spring semester. In regard to circulation, the last day to turn in circulation materials this semester is December 11th. Any materials checked out after December II will not have to be turned in until January 20, 1982. Interlibrary loan requests from faculty, staff, and students should be turned in to the Interlibrary Loan Office by Wednesday. November 25th, in order to be processed before the scheduled move. Interlibrary loans requests will once again be accepted on January 18, the first day of the spring semester. The deadline for the receipt of incoming ILL requests from other libraries is December 11th. Materials lent at this time will not have to be turned in to the library until January 20, 1982. The ILL Department will be back in full swing on the day of reopening. For faculty members of WCU. the new addition of Hunter will have twelve faculty study areas, each equipped with a desk and chair, a typing stand, shelving, and best of all, a window. To be eligible to use a study for a semester, faculty members must complete an application form available from their department chairman. Faculty studies will be assigned by the University Librarian after a review of the submitted applications. The deadline for receipt of these applications in the University Librarian's Office is November 15, 1981. For' WCU, the new addition to Hunter Library should come as a more than welcome change. The existing building will receive total renovation, and will take an entire different look. Once the new addition is opened, students will no longer enter Hunter at the existing entrance. Instead, a new entrance will be opened to the side nearest Stilwell with a bridge and covered walkway leading to it. Upon entering on this floor, a new circulation desk will appear, along with a reference counter, all newspapers, microfilm, periodicals, and the Technical Service Department. These are just a few of the new added attractions located on the approximate 55,000 square feet of space. Students will have more seating space, more study areas, and best of all, more choice as to where they want to study. No longer will students have to walk up four or five staircases to find a book, for all circulating books (books that can be checked out by the public) will be on the ground level of the new addition. "The new addition to the library will make coming to the library a pleasure," said WCU's Head Librarian Mr. William J. Kirwan. "It will make library use more direct and practical for our campus, plus open up about double the space to work in than before. We will have perhaps one of the biggest university libraries in North Carolina, and Western will definitely benefit from this major change." The existing library will have a completely different look inside, according to Kirwan. The existing floors as they are known now, will change in appearance and numbering. For example, what is now the third floor, will be called the first or ground level floor when the new addition is opened. Also, with the move will come the additions of the campus Media Center to the existing by Russ Randolph to page 8 James Gains National Honors A superb performance at Marshall earned Anthony James Associated Press National Back of the Week and Southern Conference Player of the Week Honors. He is the third Catamount to receive the Conference Player of the Week Award. Johnny Williams, who is AJ's roommate, was the Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against UT-Chattanooga and quaterback Ronnie Mixon received the Offensive Player of the Week Award following a 322 yard aerial show at Florida State. James is only the second player in the Southern Conference in ten years to be voted Associated Press Pa ck of the Week. Last year, Furman's Mike Glenn was named Back of the Week following a 312 yard rushing performance against Presbyterian. James, who has been hampered by a chronic back injury most of the season, came off the bench against Marshall midway through the second quarter and reeled off 243 yards to tie WCU's Darrell Lipford's single game rushing mark set in 1977 against Marshall on the same field. James, a junior tailback, had only 33 yards in the first half after taking over the Catamount backfield when starting tailback Melvin Dorsey went to the sidelines with a pinched nerve midway of the second period. The Hartsville, South Carolina product reeled off an amazing 210 yards and scored three touchdowns in the second half to bring Western Carolina from a 21-10 deficit to a 38-28 Southern Conference victory. "Anthony was just super and his statistics speak for themselves," said head coach Bob Waters. "He was a factor in every play." When asked about his performance, James commented, "The line was blocking real well and the holes were there." He also said that WCU's trainer Fred Cantler did an excellent job in nursing his back injury. When James is not kicking dust in opponent's faces on the gridiron, he is on the track setting long jump records. He runs track and he owns the Southern Conference long jump mark of 25*2". James also runs a 4.38 forty-yard dash. Western is fortunate to have an athlete of AJ's quality and his a ccomplishment are a mark of which we all should be proud of. by Ange|o Grier Junior tailback Anthony James was given quite an honor when he was named National Back of the Week by the Associated Press.
