Ladies" Audition Auditions for Western Carolina University's production of "Ladies In Retirement" will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8 in Stillwell Building's Little Theatre. A classical mystery by Edward Percy and Reginald Denham, the play has roles for six women and one man. Auditions are open to all. Scripts are available for pre-audition reading in Room 122, Hoey Auditorium. The play will be presented by WCU's department of speech and theatre arts Nov. 16-21. Thirsty? by Toni Saddler A social club called Thirsty's is scheduled to open October 16, the Friday of Homecoming weekend, in the basement of the Hungry Mother restaurant. Thirsty's members will be allowed to brown bag, and set-ups and mixers will be available. The club will provide frequent live music as well as theme nights and possibly stand-up comics, movies, and barbeques. Overnight lockers for storage of bottles will be available to members 21 and older. The facilities will also be available for private charter. Members must be 18 or older, and it is stressed that only people 21 and older may brown bag liquor. Membership is required to attend the club, although each member may bring up to two guests. Membership applications are available now at the Hungry Mother and must be filed 30 days prior to membership. Only a limited number of applications will be sold, although managers plan to sell more applications as the club expands. The facilities now include a fully-equipped bar and live-music facilities. A patio is under construction. A large amount of planning and work on Thirsty's has been done by two WCU students. I hey call the opening of the club a plan to "bring Cullowhee into the "80s." According to the students, Thirsty's is planning a variety of things to do, with overall good entertainment as their primary goal. "We want to provide students with a place to go to socialize with a nice, friendly atmosphere." Are You S.A.N.E.? Students Against Nuclear Energy welcome all interested individuals to attend and participate in the second organizational meeting starting at 7 p.m. in the Catamount room of the University Center. Dr. Allen Moore, of the Biology Department, will guest speak at 8 p.m. on the topic "Energy Options: The Soft Path." If you are unsure about Nuclear Energy, come listen for yourself and make your own judgments. Forensics In Red by Leah Geanopulos Western Carolina University's Forensic Society, one of our most successful campus organizations, is likely to run short of funds this year. On their agenda for fall and spring semesters are seven tournaments plus the National Forensic Association competition in Columbus, Ohio. Traveling expenses, general fees, rooms, and food for the twelve to eighteen competitors are estimated at $6,658.50 according to this year's budget. Most of the funding for the Forensic Society is alloted through the Speech and Theater Arts Department; some other funds are contributed by the SGA, and in cases of emergency shortage the Society can appeal to Dean McCrone of the School of Arts and Get Ready Cullowhee! Sciences oi to Dr. Stoltz in academic affairs. Dr. Kathleen Sandquist, director ol Forensics .it Western since 1973. said that at this time they are allowed the use ol 7 - 8 cars and that 15 -18 will be needed; this is their most pressing problem at this time. During tournaments the contestants are alloted five dollars a day to cover food expenses, and the rest they pay themselves. This amount is usually insufficient, and since the students cannot be reimbursed from their meal tickets some of them cannot afford to participate. Dr. Sandquist has been elected executive secretary of the Carolina Forensics Association, the highest office in this association of North and South Carolina colleges and universities. She will direct, as part of this position, the state tournaments and she will try to bring them to Western if motel space can be made available. If not, a possible location may be Asheville. Since their first full season in 1973, the WCU Forensics Society has received 131 trophies, and each year they have made higher honors. In tournaments last year, the Society received 41 trophies overall and at the state tournament finished second in the Individual Events Sweepstakes and fourth in the Overall Sweepstakes with students qualifying for the national championship in twelve out of fourteen areas of competition. They are expecting even better results in this, their eighth season. At this time there are around twenty-five students active in the Forensic Society and that number should continue to increase every semester, providing that they have funds to continue traveling the distances necessary to compete.
