  • Newsbriefs Courses Offered lit courses will be offered by Western Carolina University's Cherokee Center at Cherokee High School for the fall semester beginning Tuesday, Sept. 2. Registration for the courses will he held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. today, Aug. 28 at the high school in Cherokee. Students may apply for admission to classes taught at Cherokee regardless of their place of residence. 1 he\ also may combine Cherokee classes with other WCU classes held in Asheville or on the main campus in Cullowhee for a full-time class load. Courses offered this fall throught the Cherokee resident credit center will be taught from 6:30 to 9:10 p.m. unless otherwise noted. The courses to be offered are: -Physical Education 102-Beginning and Advanced Beginning Swimming, from 5 to 6:15 p.m. Mondays, beginning Sept. 2. One credit hour. --Biology 103-General Botany, survey of plant kingdom. Mondays. Four credit hours. -Political Science 101-American Government and Politics, overview of the American political system. Tuesdays. Three credit hours. -Music 101-Introduction to Music, music for general student. Tuesdays. Three credit hours. --Cherokee 131-Elementary Cherokee, audio-lingual practice of basic structures. Tuesdays. Three credit hours. -Biology 103L-General Botany Lab. Wednesdays. --English 101-Freshman Composition, assigned I ing, writing exercises emphasizing grammar, punctuation, syntax and paragraphs. Wednesdays. CIML Grant ,The U.S. Economic Development Administration has awarded a $50,000 matching grant to the Economic Development Division of WCU's Center for Improving Mountain Living (CIML), according to an announcement from the office of Congressman Lamar Gudger in Washington. The Economic Development Division will use the grant to continue providing technical assistance to small businesses in a 28-county area in western North Carolina. WCU will match the grant with $50,000. The division is one of 36 university centers supported by the Economic Development Administration (EDA). It has received funding from EDA on an annual basis since June of 1969. In assisting small businesses within the region, the division offers free counseling sessions to answer questions in marketing, sales, advertising, small business loans, and other areas of business. It also works in the area of job development and assists women and minorities in their business ventures. Photo Contest Set For the third year in a row. the Jackson County Family Life Council will be participating in the annual Mountain Heritage Day scheduled for September 20 at Western Carolina University. This year the Council is sponsoring the second annual Family Life Photo Contest which is open to any amateur photographer in the area. Selected photos will be exhibited at the Family Life Council exhibition area on Mountain Heritage Day and at the Jackson County Library. In addition to being exhibited, cash or merchandise awards will be given to winning photos. Any non-professional amateur photographer of any age may submit up to six black and white or color photos. A 50-cents entry fee for each photo will be charged to help defray costs of printing the brochure. There are also categories for family photo albums and for snapshots. Photos, except snapshots, may be any size but must be mounted or matted. The subject of the photos should deal with some aspect of family living, such as family gatherings, family holidays, family portraits or family work and play activities. All entries must be accompanied by a completed entry form and submitted to either Livingston Kelley Studio, Main Street, Sylva. or Cashiers Country Store, NC 107 South. Cashiers, by September 12. 1980. Cash awards ranging from $15 to $65 will be given the photos judged in the following categories: Best In Show. Best Color, Best Black And White, and two honorable mention awards. Merchandise awards will be given for Outstanding Family Photo Albums and Snapshots Award winning photos, except for family albums, will become part of the Pamir) life council's permanent collection al the Mountain Heritage tenter in Cullov. The Family Life Council sees the photo contest as a waj to begin documenting family living in the area and also a wa\ of focusing on the value and importance ot family lite. The family life Council was established to provide learning activities for the enrichment of family living, to provide opportunities for exchanging concerns and ideas about family life, to provide information about services that are available to families and to stimulate and assist in developing needed services for families. Hall, a native of Waynesville. has been named manager of small business development for the economic development division of WCU's Center for Improving Mountain Living (CIML). English Exam Set September 9 The English Proficiency Test will be administered on Tuesday, September 9, 1980 at 7:00 PM in Forsyth Building, Room 203. Photo Workshop A lamilv Life Council spokesman announced thai u workshop on mounting and matting photos will be held on Saturday, August 30 from 2:00 to 5:00 at the Village Studio Art Gallery ill Dillsboro. Th* workshop is being held for those people who would like to enter the Family I ife I'hoto Contest, but are hesitant because they feel they are not skilled enough in mounting and matting photos Susan Neal and Jim Smith, owners of the Village Art Gallery Studio, said that mat board and mounting paper will be available at cost to the participants of the workshop. Participants should bring at least one photo and exactO knife and scissors if possible. The entry deadline for the Photo Contest is September 12.
