The Cats, with a lineup dotted with freshman players, have compiled .ill1* overall record and i 3-2 mark in the conference. And. thai won lost mark puts the team squarely in the thick of a title chase. The Cats are in fifth place, but only one half game behind The Citadel (4-2) and only one-half game behind league-leading Marshall (.VI) in the loss column. After gaining some much needed momentum against Iocs UNC-Wilmington and Campbell University, the Cats entertained the Furnian Paladins Wednesday. The game, originally scheduled for Tuesday, was rescheduled because of bad weather. Futman is 1-2 in the league and lost to the Cats 6-4 on March 25. Rebounding from two conference losses, the Cats whipped UNC-Wilmington 7-5 and 19-8. Thursdaj and Friday, and then took two games from Campbell in a Saturday double-header in Ciillowliee. Western ripped the Camels 12-5 in the first game, and then, on a two-out solo homti run by catcher Jim Reinicker in the ninth inning, rallied the second game for a 4-3 w in. Western combined for .12 hits against the Sciliawks. getting eight runs off the bat of sophomore Don Ingle, in those two wins. Western survived seven home runs b) Campbell in the two games, including lour b) outfielder Tom Montgomery, while ripping 24 hits combined. WCU centerfielder continues to hit Carpenter breaks four batting records WCU senior centerfielder Willie Carpenter established school career records in four batting categories this weekend while leading the Cats to four consecutive non-conference games. In a four-game stretch. Thursday and Friday games with UNC-Wilmington and a Saturday doubleheader with Campbell University, Carpenter batted a torrid 11 of 17 (.647) and led the Cats to a combined total of 42 runs in the four games. Western whipped the UNC-W Seahawks 7-5 and 19-8, and swept the Campbell Camels 12-5 and 4-3 in nine innings. Carpenter, now batting .41° with 33 runs batted in for the Cats. 14-9 overall, and 3-2 in the Southern Conference, set the school records in the double header with Campbell. With his first hit of the day. in his first at bat in the opening game. Carpenter established a new career record for base hits. He broke the old mark of 143 set jointlv by Wayne Tolleson (74-77) and Freddy Brown (76-79). Carpenter currently has 148 hits. Carpenter's fifth inning home run broke the career record of 2.18 set by Brown, and when the day was over. the 5-9 native of Homestead. Florida had 243 career total bases. The home run also tied the career mark of 15 held by Keith F.bcrsole (""-""8) and Ken Morgan (61-63). His game-tying home run in the sixth inning of the second game broke that school record and established another one in the runs batted in category. Carpenter now has 127 career ribs, eclipsing the old record of 126 Bat Cats edge Paladins, stand 3rd in conference set by Brown, also. Carpenter, a 1979 All-Southern Conference selection in football and baseball, is within reach of several more lifetime and single-season school records. He is only five games played away from tying the career record of 120 (set by Tolleson). and needs only 44 at bats and three doubles to tics career marks in those categories. He is within 15 basehits of tying the single season school record established by Keith Kbcrsolc in 1978 and. with 14 doubles to date, could reach Tommy Hayes' 1971 record setting number of 20 two-baggers in a season. With sixteen more games scheduled. Carpenter could break single season numbers in runs batted in (48 set by Ebcrsolc in '77). at bats (134 by Haves in 1971), and total bases (95 set by Ebersole in 1977). Western Carolina used four hits by freshman Mel Kinsey and 3 RBI's by centerfielder Willie Carpenter to outlast Furman University 7-5 in a Southern Conference baseball game played in Cullowhee Wednesday. The Cats, with the win, improved its conference record to 4-2 and lifts Western into a tie for 3rd in the league standings. Furman 1-3 drops to seventh place. After falling behind 3-1 after two innings to Cats used a 3 run third inning keyed by a Willie Carpenter single to pull back out ahead. Kinsey, who was 45 on the day, scored in six Ji on a triple by Mark Baxter to keep the Cats ahead after Furman picked up 2 more runs on a single by Greg Mascere, the Paladins rightfielder. Sophomore Randy Sims, 3-2. went the distance for the Cats, allowing just 5 hits while striking out 7. After a single by shortstop Jeff Johnson in the third. Sims allowed just 4 more hits. WCU defeated Furman earlier in the season by a 6-4 score and Sims was also the winner in that game. Steve Lloyd (1-4) was the loser for Furman (5-11) after lasting only 2 and two thirds innings as the starter. Carpenter's 3 RBI's lifted his conference-leading total to 36. and while going 2-4 from the plate, lifted his overall season batting averageto .422. WCU ripped 13 hits to Furman 5. but left 15 baserunners. The Cats. 15-9. entertain Clemson in a 3 p.m. game at Childress Field Thursday and will play in the league again Saturday in a doubleheader against UT-Chattanooga in Chattanooga.
