  • THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN March b. 1980 P»«ell Runnln' & row/n' 2nd Annual Tuckaseigee River & Road Races The Second Annual Tuckaseigee River and Koad Races, featuring the North Carolina Open Canoe Championships and also a 10,000 meter run will be held April 12 and 13 in Cullowhee. The canoe championships are drawing participants from a wide regional basis. including several past olympians, the Nantahala Outdoor Center racing team and defending champions The Tuckaseigee Road Race will focus on an area basis and is expected to draw participants from Western North Carolina and the surrounding states of South Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee. The North Carolina Open Canoe Championships will be held on a 10 mile stretch of the Tuckaseigee River beginning in Webster and culminating downriver at the Barkers Creek Bridge. Basically a downriver race, the river flows through the Tuckaseigee gorge and has class I to class III rapids with a small portage midway in the course. Flowing through a scenic valley with the Smokey Mountains and Blue Ridge Mountains bordering on either side, the Tuckaseigee is ideally suited to provide challenge and excitement for the experienced canoeist without eliminating the novice from competi tion, There are eight classes in the race including divisions for both cruising and downriver canoes and classes lor men, women, and mixed. Among expected competitors are: 1'avson Kenncdv. defending champion and also current National Champion; John Burton. director for the Nantahala Outdoor Center and a 1972 Olympian; and Carrie Aston and Bunnie Johns, one ot the hottest C2 womens teams m the nation, Registration for the race will close at 11 a.m. A competitors meeting will be held shortly thereafter with the race beginning at mxin. The Tuckaseigee Road Race will be held on and around the campus of Western Carolina University beginning at 10 a.m. Sunday, April 13 on the lawn of the A.K. Hinds University Center. The course is expected to be fast and will be on smooth, hard surface with one hill involved and also several medium grade slopes. Mile splits, water and first aid stations will be present along with extra race staffing. A competitors meeting will begin the day at 9 a.m. and a one mile fun run will begin at 9:15 followed by the road race. Competitors expected to challenge last year's champion lim Otten. and his course record ol 33:18 include the WCU cross country team, featuring freshman w hi/ Sam Shirley. members ol ihe Asheville and Greenv ille 1 rack Clubs and runners from throughout the immediate four state region. Awards will be presented to First, Second and lhird place finishers in each division immediately following each day's events. The entire weekend is sponsored by Last Minute Productions, of Western Carolina University, Cullowhee Outfitters, the Nantahala Outdoor Center, and the Jackson County Recreation and Parks Department.
