SASAAAS Western Carolina has recently received 30 videotapes on Japan made possible by a grant of $1,600 to the University from the South Atlantic States Association for Asian and African studies (SASAAAS). 1 he lapes were provided by the University of Mid-America in Nebraska and will be available through August 1980. The tapes have been divided into two series: a 14-tape component entitled "Japan: The Living Tradition", which primarily deals with early history, humanities and the arts; and a 16-tape component concerned with modern history, political and economic institutions and lifestyles, entitled "Japan: The Changing Tradition.'' The videotapes are catalogued and filed in WCU's University Media Center under the name of Dr. Jeff Neff of the Geography department. They are available for check-out and on campus use to anyone within the University and to teachers in all area public schools, simply by following normal Media Center procedures. low-level radioactive waste. (2) one of only two facilities in the U.S. producing plutonium, and the only plant producing hydrogen-tritium for the U.S. nuclear weapons program, and (3) the only operable nuclear waste reprocessing facility in the Western Hemisphere. Such a strategic concentration of components in the uranium cycle exist nowhere else (All right here in the Carolinas.) The nuclear threat stands or falls at Barnwell. Action 1 took place last April, with two thousand participating in the match ami tally. Action 11 will hit harder, and it takes place this weekend, with educational workshops planned for Saturday, and with Sunday set aside as the big day. (Many of us are planning only to go on Sunday.) RHCC Anew Safe Energy The local chapter of the Carolinians for Safe Energy has a special target this weekend—Barnwell, SC, home of three large, separate, nuclear facilities (none of which generate electricity for consumers). We find here: (1) the onlv storage site east of the Rockies for The Residence Hall Coordination Counsel (RHCC) is a new organization on campus established for the purpose of providing a medium through which students may voice their suggestions and complaints about residence hall conditions- and policies, coordinating educational, cultural, and social activities, and assisting in policy making. The RHCC is not connected with the Student Government Association or any other campus organization. Each of the nine residence halls on campus will have its own residence hall counsel consisting of about two representatives for each RA, a secretary, treasurer, chairman, vice president ami president. Ihe RHCt officials w ill act as a medium for communication between the individual residence hall counsels, other organi/ations, and the administration. If a student has a suggestion or complaint about the residence halls he should contact one of the representatives on his floor. The representative will convey the information to the appropriate residence hall axjrdinating officer. At this level, if enough people support the suggestion or complaint, a vote can be held by the residents of the hall. If the vote reveals that the majority of the residents support a change in policy, the suggested change is forwarded to the administration and professional stall through the RH( ( RHCC activities will be held for the purpose of providing an environment in which students who live in the residence halls will be able to meet each other and share educational, social, and cultural experiences. Some of the activities are movies, disco, casino nights, ice cream parties, and building homecoming Floats, In the words of RHCC chairman 1 inilv Sarella, " 1 hese activities will give the students I chance to get together." The RHCC consists of a president, vice president, chairperson, vice chairperson, treasurer, secretary, publicity chairperson, housing representative, and faculty advisors. The program will be funded by housing. Proceeds from RHCC activities will be donated to charity. Representatives are elected by the residence halls Ihcy represent.
