It was the first meet for them on their home course and came after two disappointing showings in the Elon and Carson-Newman Invitationals last week. The Cats as a team shot a 384, to the 395 of Carson-Newman and the 398 of Presbyterian. Willie Stewart shot a fine two over 73 to lead all scorers as teammates Marty Green and Mike Allison contributed scores of 76 and 77 respectively. Scott Ferguson also shot a 78 to lead the Cats to a fine afternoon of golf. The wins raise the record to 6-4-1 on the season in dual matches. Their next action is Thursday and Friday against ASU in Boone. The track team also had a respectable week with a good showing in the Davidson relays. The Catamounts finished 13th in a field of 33 in the invitational event getting a very strong performance from Charles Opdike in the javelin throw and Eddie McGill in the long jump. Opdike's throw of 203 feet was the best in the conference this season, while McGill finished fourth in the jump with a 23'2" mark. The team will be busy over the Easter vacation as they take on South Carolina and Baptist College Friday in Columbia with a Monday meet at Marshall University. The Cats will have a home meet with ASU April 21 in Cullowhee. Friday evening the annual Purple-White intrasquad scrimmage was played at Whitmire Stadium. The Purple team won the game 7-6 on a six yard touchdown run by halfback Robert Brown. Kicker David Monroe kicked the extra point to nail down the victory, that was largly set up by freshman walk-on quarterback Mitch Watson's engineering of the winning drive. With only 1:04 left in the game, Watson hit a series of clutch passes, one a 39 yarder to Dwayne Norman to setup the touchdown by Brown. The game was highlighted by good overall defensive play and good solid fundamentals.
