  • PAGE 6/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/ MARCH 8, 1979 Carolinian sportsbriefs Gymnastics meet ends season The WCU women's gymnastics team turned in one of its best performances of the season last weekend to claim fourth place in the NCAIAW Championship Meet held in Durham. Coach Susan Field's team scored a season high 112 points to close out its season on a positive note. However, two members of the team have qualified for the AIAW Region II meet and have extended their seasons. Senior Martha Benedict and freshman Beth Myers will represent WCU in the meet at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, March 16-17. Benedict, one of two seniors on the squad, qualified in the all-around competition. Myers, from Greenwood, S.C, placed sixth in the balance beam and also qualified in the all-around competition. UNC-Chapel Hill won the state title with 129 points followed by Appalachian State, Duke, WCU and East Carolina. Tennis begins The Western Carolina men's tennis team, led by Coach Joseph Meigs, is looking forward to the 1979 season. With the season starting in less than two weeks the team members have been fighting for the six starting positions. Past Western teams have not seen this much competition among the players. The team shows strength in all positions with no exaggerated weaknesses in the lineup. The 1979 season begins Sunday, March 18 when the Cats will host Ohio University. The second match will be on Wednesday March 21 with another match at home against regular opponents UNC-Asheville. The remainder of the schedule will be announced soon. Rain delays baseball WCU's baseball team successfully opened its 1979 baseball season last Saturday with an impressive 3-1 vvin over Georgia Tech in a abbreviated contest in Atlanta. Saturday's game, which was called in the sixth inning because of rain, became official when play could not be resumed Sunday afternoon, also because of a rain-soaked field. Western's scheduled home opener Monday against Carson-Newman College at Ronnie Childress Field was postponed because of an unplayable field due to heavy rains over the weekend. The game has been rescheduled for April 11. The Catamounts will be on the road for their next seven games before returning home March 20 to face Salem College. South Carolina against USC's Gamecocks. Other opponents on the trip includes Francis Marion, Campbell and UNC-Wilming- ' Three rookies made impressive debuts in the win over Georgia Tech. Freshmen righthanders Randy Sims and Jeff Mashburn combined to limit Tech to only two hits and catcher John Lethcoe supplied a powerful bat and called an outstanding game behing the plate. "I was very pleased with out young players," said Haywood as he noted the performances of Sims, Mashburn and Lethcoe. "John (Lethcoe) did a super job in his first college game." Only three lettermen started in Saturday's game as the remaining six positions were manned by either rookies or inexperienced upper classmen. Western drew first blood in the second inning on Lethcoe's triple and a Tech wild pitch that enabled pinch runner Gerald Harp to score. The Yellow Jackets tied the game in the bottom of the inning on Mike Macon's home run. The Catamounts scored the winning run in the third when veteran infielder David Ball sent sophomore infielder Billv Bovd home on an infield grounder.
