  • FEBRUARY 8, 1979/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/PAGE 7 sports Cats still kicking in conference race by STEVE SURLES Sports Editor The Catamounts kept their first-division Southern Conference hopes alive this past week by splitting conference games with Davidson College and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. A Saturday night crowd of 3,160 in Reid Gym saw the Cats take a big victory over the Davidson Wildcats 87-74 behind 29 points from Ray Person. WCU jumped to an early lead, partly due to the cold shooting by the Wildcats, going into the locker rooms at the half 41-25. Davidson shot only 20 percent in the half with their leading scorer John Gerdy hitting for only nine points. WCU had to hold off a tough Wildcat rally late in the second half as Davidson pulled to within four points in the last five minutes of the game. In their delay spread offense, the Cats kept the Wildcats at bay, aided by timely foul shooting. Person's 29 points came from a variety of twisting drives and short inside jumpers. He canned 14 of 18 shots from the floor in scoring his season high for the Cats. He also pulled down eight rebounds. Larry Caldwell added 19 points, also a season high for him, with 12 assists, while running the Cat offense and spread to near perfection. Greg Dennis and Eric Taylor added 14 points to the attack which produced the most points for the Cats against a conference team this year. Davidson's Gerdy, who leads the SC and is fifth nationally in scoring with a 26.7 average, finished the game with 29 points. The loss dropped the Wildcats to 1-6 in the conference, 6-14 overall. With the victory, Western took a giant step toward a first-division finish with a 5-4 SC mark, 12-9 overall. Monday night the Cats travelled to Maclellan Gym in Chattanooga to take on the powerful Mocs of UTC. Both teams needed a conference win. The game was close throughout with the Mocs gaining control in the last three minutes to pull out a 73-70 win over the Cats. WCU jumped out to an early 13-7 lead in the first seven minutes of the game on five points by Greg Dennis and four from Ray Person. The Mocs tied the game 13 all on Norm Anchrum's follow shot a minute and a half later. The Cats pulled back out to a five point lead 25-20 with 6:40 left, while going into the halftime with a 38-34 lead. For the first half WCU shot 70.6 percent on 12 of 17 shots with Ray Person scoring 12 points. In the first minute of the second half Forrest Callaway hit a jumper and two foul shots to send WCU to their biggest lead of eight points, 42-34. The Cats maintained the lead until the Moc's Delta Brodgcn hit a tip shot to send them ahead 53-51 with 11:30 left. Led by Ray Person and a flurry of UTC turnovers, the Cats foreed out to another lead of five points, 64-59 with 5:30 left. At that point the Moc's leading scorer for the game, James Jones, fouled out and the Cats appeared in control. NC 28786 The Cats began having trouble with the Chattanooga full-court press. Terry Rutherford's fifth foul, and Delta Brogden's two foul shots sent the Mocs ahead for good 65-64 with 3:23 left. The Mocs went ahead by five with two more foul shots on Ray Person's fifth foul. The Cats fought back, pulling to within one point, 69-68 on Eric Taylor's reverse with 29 seconds left. Eric Smith and Norm Anchrum iced the game for UTC with two free throws each in the last 16 seconds. The Cats were led by Ray Person's 23 points and eight rebounds. Greg Dennis added 17 points, with Eric Taylor's 10 and Larry Caldwell's nine points leading the Catamount effort. James Jones came off the UTC bench to hit for 16 points, with Delta Brogden adding 12. For the game WCU hit on 22 of 40 field goals, 26 of 36, from the line. UTC was 28 of 57 from the floor, 17 of 27 from the foul line. The game was closely called, with WCU being whistled for 23 fouls, UTC 30. The victory put the Mocs back into contention for fourth place in the Southern Conference with a 3-5 mark, 12-7 overall. The loss dropped the Catamount record to 5-5 in the conference, 12-10 overall, but left them in fourth place in the league. The next Catamount action is tonight in Clinton, S.C. against Presbyterian College. The next conference action is Saturday in Huntington, West Virginia against Marshall. The last WCU home game (not counting a possible SC tourney game) is February 17 against The Citadel. Terry Rutherford ouljumps a Davidson player In Saturday night's game in Reid gym.
