Can't be bought, And it can't be given away.'' bv LAURA WEST Staff Writer WritU'n by tli>' organization's advisor, Mr. Howard J, Hickes, the above could be the motto for The Student Council for Exceptional Children (SCEC). The local chapter of SCEC and its 60 members participate in projects to aid exceptional children (any child who deviates from the norm enough to require special services). Presently the organization is holding a raffle for a large stuffed dog. Funds raised will be added to those previously collected at a car wash and the club's annual bake sale at Mountain Heritage Day. Some of the money will go to the Jackson County Sheltered Workshop to aid in the purchase of a van to be used to transport adults to and from the workshop. The club's membership is comprised of education majors in the fields of Speech and Hearing, mental retardation, and learning disabilities. However, membership is open to anv student interested in tiding exceptional children. The club meets twice a month. ever) first and third Wednesday night. The club's officers are: Doris McCain, president; David Orause. president-elect; Ton) Braun, vice president; Peggy Salmons, secretary; Mind) Mallionx, treasurer; Carol Kent, membership chairman; Bonnie Singleton, historian; and Annie McEachirn, news editor. The news editor is responsible for sending four newsletters per vear to all tin- local chapter members as well as a copy to the National CEC. The SCEC at WCl! is a member of the state CEC as well as the National organization, which is made up of professionals as well as college students. They plan to send delegates to Charlotte for a convention on November9-10, as well as to Dallas for an International Convention in April.
