  • PAGE 10/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/SEPTEMBER 14, 1978 Cross country starts rough The WCU cti>ss country team has experienced some rough going in the first two meets of the 1978 season. Westerns distance runners opened the season last Saturday rooming on the five-mile Forest Hills Country Club course and were soundly beaten by Marshall University, the (Mending Southern Conference champion, 18-43. Marshall took five of the first six spots with only senior Tim Often breaking the string for WCU. Otten finished with a clocking of 27:15, which was 38 seconds behind Marshall's top runner and the meet winner, John Dotson. Tilings did not get any better Monday afternoon as Brevard Junior College scored the equivalent of a shutout in cross country over WCU, 15-41. However, Chad) Paul Jones saw his team outdistance Kings College in the other part of the triple-dual meet, 25-33. Otten was the top finisher for Western in Monday's meet with an eighth place time of 28:20. WCU's Dennis Francis was two seconds behind in ninth place and John Costello finished tenth, seven stwnds behind Otten. Coach Jones takes his team to Charleston, SC Saturday for a four -way mrt-t with host Ihe Citadel South Carolina and Campbell. Rebels 29 Superstars 1 Tim Otten CAP|CENTER FALL|'78|GROUPS The CAP Center Counseling Office will be offering a variety of group experiences during the Fall Semester 1978. All of our groups are designed to promote self-understanding and personal growth. All are open free of charge to WCU students on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you are interested in joining any of the groups, you must register by calling (7170 or 7344) or stopping by the CAP Center. Of course, we'd be glad to answer any questions you might have about any of the groups. GROUP DAY/TIME Thursdays 3-4 p.m. Begins October 5 Wednesdays 3-4 p.m. Assertive Training Group Do you say yes when you really mean no? Are you unable to let someone know how you really feel? Assertive training helps us find the midpoint between passivity and agression in the expression of our personal rights, felings, hopes, and fears. Eight sessions. Leader: Jean Barrineau. Vocational Decision Making Designed to help students consider and explore the different facets of making career choices. These ,. . include interests, abilities, lifestyles, decision-making Begins uctoDer ^5 style, etc. Six sessions. Leader: Willie Robinson. How to Feel Good About Yourself: Rasing Self Esteem We all have things we can do well (strengths) as well as limitations. This group will consist of structured experiences, along with a good deal of sharing so that each participant can learn to accept himself /herself, develop a healthy sense of pride in his/her abilities and begin to trust his/her own inner nature to make decisions confidently. Six to eight sessions. Leader: Boo Stremba. Test Anxiety Group Designed to help persons to control and reduce anxiety in test taking sifutations, prevent or reduce blocking, freezing, blanking, worry, tenseness, etc. Leader: Staff. Tuesdays and Thursdays 2:30-4:30 p.m. Begins October 19 To be announced GROUP Reaching Out: Helping Skills This is primarily a skill-building group based on the assumption that all people have a need at times, to discuss problems and concerns with another person who can be a helpful listener. Training will be in basic counseling skills such as active listening, reflecting feelings, and empathic understanding. Six sessions. Leaders: Barrineau and Stremba. Older Students Group This is a support group designed for the student who has come to college after being in the world of work. The older student faces many issues that are different than their younger classmate. Let's get together and talk. Gestalt Group Gestalt therapy is an existential non-analytic form of therapy developed by Fredrick and Laura Perls. Its goals are to integrate the various splits and polarities in the personality, to replace environmental support with self support, and to increase the individuals awareness of self and the world. Eight sessions. Leader: Jean Barrineau. Personal Growth Group An introductory experience focusing on increasing one's self awareness, understanding one's own and other's feelings, and improving interpersonal relationships in a supportive group environment.
