  • PAGE 2/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/AUGUST 31, 1978 Carolinian Newshriefs HEW gives grant WCU has been awarded a $44,645 grant from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare to continue a teaching program in child and family social services. Part of the grant will pay the salary of a new faculty member in WCU's department of social work. K.a\ Kuczynski. Students enrolled in child and familv welfare field instruction courses will be eligible to receive stipends paid by the grant. Ms. Kuczynski, formerly on the faculty at East Tennessee State University, is scheduled to receive a doctor's degree in social work this winter from the Catholic University of America. A graduate of Edgewood College. Ms. Kuczynski holds the master's degree in social work from Rutgers University. This is the third consecutive year HEW's Office of Human Development has given Western funds for the child and family welfare program. Last year some 20 students who received field training in area social service agencies were awarded stipends. Be involved The Student Association for Government and Legal Affairs (SAGLA) will meet tonite in McKee 15. All students interested in becoming involved in local and national matters of interest are cordially invited to attend. That's Thursday, August 31 at 5 p.m. in McKee 15. September 1-4 at the Old School, located on Highway 441, three miles south of Dillsboro. The fair will be held Friday, Saturday and Monday from 10 to 7, and Sunday from 12:30 to 7. The public is invited with free admission and free parking. Artists and craftsmen from the southeast will demonstrate, exhibit and sell their skilled work which will include leather, pottery, hand-blown glass, fine silver jewelry, metal sculpture, oil, water color and acrylic paintings, photography and much more. The Old School, a remodeled school house which houses a number of attractive boutiques featuring antiques, curios and crafts under the general supervision of Mr. Wade Ford will host the Labor Day weekend event and the Falling Leaf Festival to be held October 13-15. These shows, together with the High Country Christmas Art and Craft Show to be held November 30th and December 1st and 2nd at the AsheviHe Civic Center are part of the continuing efforts of High Country Crafters', Inc. to give area artists and craftsmen opportunity to exhibit and sell their work and to promote Western North Carolina as the art and craft center of the Carolina mountains. Pizza again! Cops learn WCU has received a $4,500 grant to help pay for tuition and fees of law enforcement officers enrolled in WCU classes. The grant was awarded to the criminal justice program at WCU by the Justice Department's Law Enforcement Assistance Administration. Law enforcement officers who think they qualify can receive further information by calling the WCU criminal justice program at 227-7271. Students awarded Two WCU students have been awarded $400 scholarships by Group No. Six of the North Carolina Bankers' Association. Shirley Jean Whitaker of Rt. 1 William Road, Fletcher, and Harold Dean Coward of Sylva Rt. 1 were selected for the award by a special scholarship committee of the association. Both are WCU seniors majoring in accounting. No, the days of pizza delivery to your dorm have not ended. Speedy's Pizza will finally open on Monday at 5 p.m. Cullowhee's famous pizza delivery service has been closed up to now due to maintenance on the delivery cars. So, if you get the urge for a late night snack you can once again satisfy that urge with a hot Speedy's Pizza. Their number is 293-9222. Auditions Fair coming The "Season's End" High Country Fair, one of two new fairs to be produced by High Country Crafters', Inc. of Asheville this year, will be held on this weekend. Auditions for the WCU production of "Mary, Mary" will be held tonight at 7 p.m. in the Little Theatre here. The play, by Jean Kerr, has parts for three men and two women. It will be presented as a dinner theatre production October 10-11. Auditions are open to all interested persons. Gong show here Come out and be a star! Alpha Psi Omega is sponsoring a faculty and staff "Gong Show" on October 1 at 3 p.m. in Hoey Auditorium. Proceeds from the Gong Show will go to Cystic Fibrosis. Persons interested should contact Sylvia Depree in the Speech and Theatre Arts Department before September 15, by calling 227-7491.
