  • PAGE 6/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/FEBRUARY 16, 1978 University Forum: Is modern art only for artists? by LAURA WEST Staff Writer Ihe topic of Monday's Forum program was "Interpretation of Modem Art," with the principle speaker Dr. Edmund Firestone, head of the art department. Other participants were Dr. Joseph Jacobs and Mr. Duane Oliver of the art department, and'Dr. Brian Martine of philosophy and religion. I he program began with a series of slides showing several pieces of modern art. focusing on the Impressionistic style of painting. In comparing art of the twentieth century to that of the sixteenth century, or Renaissance period. Dr. Firestone cited thai art no longer plays as important a role in the culture as it once did. In the sixteenth century when a person viewed a work of art such as Michelangelo's "Creation of Man," he saw the significance of the work immediately. Prior to the twentieth century in almost any art work the images were easily understood as they applied directly to culture, religion, or lifestyle. Since the beginning of the twentieth century, art has been more for those who study it, for those who are most familiar with art. It becomes necessary for a person to understand the conventions of modern art in order to thoroughly interpret a particular work. Since most modern art is impressionistic, the emotions and psychic situations must be searched for in the images presented in the work. Some impressionistic works show the violence, agony and frustration of our times. However the emotions of joy, contentment, and excitement can and are also portrayed in modern art. Dr. Firestone presented several slides in which these emotions were shown in modern works. When we view a totally abstract art work, we have little or no idea as to its meaning. "The object of the abstract painter is to create emotions within the soul through color and shape. His work represents mood rather than objects," says Firestone. Some of the conventions of abstract art include use of geometric shapes, contrasting color, and distorted figures. Modern art's meaning is not then found in literal, physical things, but rather in the relationship the images have to our modern age. Dr. Firestone told his audience, "There is a great deal of meaning in art. Those who search for the meaning in art will find it." At the conclusion to Dr. Firestone's lecture, comments were welcomed from the other members of the panel. The question was raised concerning how to determine the quality of modern art. Rather a work of art "succeeds if it creates a spiritual vibration. Otherwise it is merely decorative." It seems to be the JIM GOLDSTON PHOTO general consensus that quality in art is more of a subjective judgement than an objective one. The most basic judgement of the quality of art is the art work's ability to withstand the test of time. Next week's Forum topic will be "The Abortion Controversy."
