  • FEBRUARY 2. 1978/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN'Page 9 Four more signees this week Cats run total to twelve Head football coach Bob Waters announced four more signees this week, bringing the new list of Catamounts for the 1978 season to 12 thus far. Jeff Dean, an All-State combination defensive back/wide receiver from Clarke Central High in Athens, Ga., heads the newest signees. Dean was announced along with Frank Wilson, a running back from Knoxville, Tenn.. Lonnic Braxton, an offensive lineman from Henderson High in Allanta. Ga., and Freddie Mitchell, a defensive back from Marietta High, Marietta. Ga. "We're very pleased to have these voting men join our program," sais Waters. "This year will not be a big year for us recruiting in terms of numbers, because we didn't lose that many players." Waters explained. "But. we have signed some quality people and some versatile people that we are confident can help us in the future, as well as next season." Waters said the Catamounts intend to sign eight Of nine more players before winding up ihe 1977-78 recruiting year. Dean. 5-9. 160, was the North Georgia Player of the Year after starting on the Clarke Central team which won Georgia's state AAA football championship last season under Coach Billy Henderson. Dean caught 17 passes for an average of 25 yards per catch and was named Clarke Central's MVP in nine of the team's 13 games. He was the overall most valuable player on the team which has thus tar produced seven players signing collegiate football grants-in-aid. "He's an outstanding young man from an outstanding program." said Waters. "We feel lie has the capability ol playing at a number of positions in our type offensive and defensive system." Dean was honored during his prep career with more than a do/en athletic achievement awards. Wilson, who played for Coach Bob Polston at Rule High, scored nine touchdowns ami rushed lor over 900 yards last season. He is 5-11. 185 pounds, and was also an outstanding basketball player, averaging 15.3 points on a team ranked fourth in the State. "He is a slashing type runner who we feel can develop into a big back for us." savs Waters. "Frank has size and quickness and his basketball ability indicates that he might also be an outstanding receiver." Braxton. 6-4, 225, was highly recruiicd on Henderson's 8-2 team last season. "Lonnic is the type of player we arc looking for." said Waters. "Not only does he have outstanding athletic ability, but he is very intelligent and a good student. He could also play a number of positions for us." Waters added. Mitchell, at 5-7, 155. is the smallest of the new group, bul touted for his quickness and determination. "He plavcd in one of the better AAA leagues in Georgia and at a high school that has given us some outstanding athletes in the past." said Waters.
